Stan Tillman receives OGC’s Gardels Award

Sep 27, 2016 -- At the September meeting of the Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC®) Technical Committee in Orlando, Florida, USA, Stan Tillman received the OGC’s prestigious Kenneth D. Gardels Award. The Gardels Award is awarded each year to individuals who have made an outstanding contribution to advance OGC's vision of geospatial information fully integrated into the world's information systems.

As the primary representative in OGC of Intergraph (a Hexagon Geospatial company), Stan Tillman has worked tirelessly to foster communication and build constructive partnerships within the Technical and Planning Committees, as well as with those working outside of OGC activities. He has contributed his expertise to numerous Working Groups, and the Technical Committee as a whole, and has shown great leadership in collaboration.

As a long standing member of the Technical Committee, Stan has provided both formal and informal mentoring of incoming members and positive engagement with all who participate in TC Meetings. Further, as a member of the Planning Committee, he has consistently provided careful and measured balance in representing industry, particularly in times of contentious debate and deliberations on future technical direction. Throughout these discussions, and in all OGC meetings, Stan has always maintained a cheerful, positive, and professional attitude.

In recent years, Stan’s leadership of the Point Cloud DWG has ensured that the working group has been professional and productive from the point of authoring the Charter to its current progress. Additionally, he has advised new Working Group chairs regarding process and the realities of leading in the OGC.

Intergraph, a Hexagon company, is a founding member of the Open Geospatial Consortium. Intergraph’s geospatial business has since been rebranded as Hexagon Geospatial.

“I am extremely honored that the OGC is recognizing the tireless dedication of Stan Tillman by selecting him to receive this year’s Gardels Award,” said Hexagon Geospatial president Mladen Stojic. "Stan exemplifies many of the values that define Hexagon Geospatial. He is professional, innovative, and entrepreneurial. He is focused on the customer, engaged with them and their needs, and seeks to deliver the best solution to them. Those who have worked with Stan know that he brings all of those values to his contributions at the OGC."

The Gardels Award is the OGC’s highest honor bestowed upon a Consortium member representative. It is given annually in memory of Kenneth Gardels, a founding director of OGC and OGC's former director of academic programs. Mr. Gardels coined the term “Open GIS,” and devoted his life to the humane and democratic uses of geographic information systems. He died at the age of 44 in 1999.
