Aviacomm and Newracom Announce Availability of High-performance 802.11ah Reference Design for IoT Applications using Sub-1GHz ISM Frequency Bands

Collaboration delivers proven power-efficient, compact IEEE 802.11ah
standard-based design for controlling IoT devices using global sub-1GHz ISM bands

Sunnyvale and Irvine California, September 1, 2016 — Aviacomm Inc, a leading developer of integrated RF (radio frequency) circuits and Newracom Inc., a wireless solutions innovator, have combined efforts to develop a high-performance IEEE 802.11ah modem for M2M and IoT applications.

The IEEE 802.11ah standard (also called “HaLow”) extends the utility of the Wi-Fi standard used for computer networking by adding features specifically designed to meet the unique requirements of Machine to Machine and Internet of Things applications. The HaLow standard uses lower frequency radio waves (from 755MHz to 928MHz globally) which propagate better over distance and are much better at traveling through obstacles like doors and walls. IoT networks that are deployed using 802.11ah standard devices achieve considerably longer operating range than those based on higher frequencies required by other standards.

The new reference design is based on Newracom’s low-power 802.11ah baseband processor, the NRC7271, and Aviacomm’s high-performance configurable RFIC, the ARF3010. This modem design delivers to market a hardware solution with advanced software features that support all global sub-1GHz ISM bands for M2M/IoT applications. This will enable M2M/IoT vendors to deploy advanced small-size, low-power networks for use in a wide variety of indoor and outdoor customized control applications.

“We have worked closely with our customers to develop a reference design that will meet all of their needs – delivering a complete high-performance solution that eases integration of the communication link into the IoT platform,” said Sok Kyu Lee, NEWRACOM’s chief executive officer. “Aviacomm has been a key partner in this effort, providing an RF transceiver that tunes to all sub-1GHz global ISM bands with excellent performance.”

Technical Highlights

Reference designs are available for both the AP (access point) and the client terminal. The AP supports up to 8,000 terminals with bit rates from 150kbps up to 15Mbps using 1, 2, or 4MHz channel bandwidths. The client terminal supports bit rates from 150kBps up to 1.950Mbps using 1 or 2MHz channels. These reference designs are optimized for cost and performance and are developed to comply with the latest IEEE 802.11ah standards. “We believe the M2M market is ready for a complete 802.11ah solution and a single design that is enabled by our ARF3010 RF transceiver,” stated Chenyu Chang, CEO of Aviacomm. “Today M2M vendors are forced to select solutions from a bewildering array of standard and non-standard options, but the Wi-Fi Alliance offers a familiar and trust-worthy approach with the availability of the new HaLow standard.”

Availability

The new reference design kit, based on the Newracom NRC7271 802.11ah baseband IC and the Aviacomm ARF3010 RFIC will be available from Newracom this fall.
