JONATHAN ROSE COMPANIES/APM PROJECT CHOSEN AS MODEL FOR AIA COURSE ON SUSTAINABILITY AND TRANSIT-ORIENT DEVELOPMENT

PASEO VERDE IN PHILADELPHIA IS NATIONAL MODEL FOR GREEN BUILDING.

PHILADELPHIA, PA - July 27, 2016 – Paseo Verde, the transit-oriented, green apartment development in Northern Philadelphia, has been selected to serve as a model for sustainable development in an upcoming American Institute of Architect (AIA) course.

Developed by Jonathan Rose Companies and Asociación Puertorriqueñosen Marcha (APM), Paseo Verde was the first LEED-ND platinum development within the United States and second globally when completed in late 2013. This environmentally friendly initiative transformed an underutilized lot into an innovative development deepening the revitalization of the community.

Paseo Verde, which literally means “green way,” provides energy efficient housing for 120 market-rate apartments as well as 30,000 square feet of commercial and community space. The building hosts a primary care facility operated by Public Health Management Corporation, social services provided by APM and a pharmacy. An on-site education center also provides its residents access to cutting edge technology.

Environmentally conscience features include green and blue roofs, permeable paving, water gardens to retain and manage water, solar panels and utilization of local, recyclable and renewable components. Materials were also selected to reduce environmentally triggered health conditions, such as asthma. Located in adjacency to the Temple University train station, Paseo Verde provides its residents with accessible transportation to employment, shopping and family throughout the community.

“Paseo Verde is a blueprint for developing communities of opportunity,” said Jonathan F.P. Rose, president of Jonathan Rose Companies. “Literally touching the North Philadelphia SEPTA station and adjacent to the educational and cultural resources of Temple University, the project provides green healthy, energy efficient housing for a range of family incomes. Together with on-site health and family services, Paseo Verde provides a complete community platform for its residents to thrive.”

The two-hour course will cover: The innovative approaches to the design of high performance multifamily housing using LEED for Homes and LEED for Homes Mid-Rise rating systems; applying LEED ND concepts to evaluate development sites, shape development to encourage pedestrian activity, and recognize principles of cohesive community design; how to conceive comprehensive on-site stormwater management strategies incorporating green roofs, blue roofs, and infiltration basins that work in concert with off-site green infrastructure to create high performance stormwater management systems; and how designing for healthy communities can encourage greater physical activity, socialization, and improved quality of life.

Paseo Verde has been showcased at the annual national Greenbuild conference and was awarded the 2013 Delaware Valley Regional Planning Association’s Land Use Project of the Year, among other honors.
