Free Hands-On Training for IoT Developers With OMA LWM2M and ARM-Based Microprocessors

EDINBURGH, SCOTLAND --(Marketwired - April 14, 2016) - The Open Mobile Alliance (OMA) today announced they are hosting a free hands-on workshop for developers of products and services for the Internet of Things (IoT). The workshop will explore the ARM® mbed IoT Device Platform featuring NXP's FRMDM-K64F hardware platform. Registration for this event, taking place on May 6 in Edinburgh, Scotland, is open to developers, makers and robotics enthusiasts seeking to deepen their knowledge of popular IoT hardware and software platforms.

This is a one-day free event where experts will guide attendees on how to deploy an OMA Lightweight M2M (LWM2M) Client on the FRDM-K64F platform designed by NXP, interact with the OMA LWM2M Server, and manage resources exposed by the IoT device. During this workshop,  Hannes Tschofenig, senior principal engineer at ARM, will show attendees how to use OMA's LWM2M protocol with this mbed Enabled™ board to connect to the mbed Device Connector and to a server.

"For the IoT to realize its full potential, open innovation and interoperability are essential. It's important that the ecosystem looks to deploy standardized protocols, particularly in the area of security. With the LWM2M protocol, the OMA developed an open standard, which offers important device management and security functionality. LWM2M improves IoT security and simplifies management, enabling secure IoT solutions to be developed and taken to market quickly," said Hannes Tschofenig, senior principal engineer, IoT Business, ARM.

Additionally, attendees will see a live demo of the LWM2M protocol using an Arduino-Yun board, presented by HOP Ubiquitous CEO, Antonio Jara. Step-by-step instructions will be given on how to install the LWM2M Client on an Arduino-Yun board and then open a connection to a server to manipulate some basic sensors. Attendees will be taught how to use the LWM2M Editor Tool to create objects and resources, as well as how to register them with OMA.

OMA's Lightweight M2M (LWM2M) is a device management protocol designed for sensor networks and the demands of a machine-to-machine (M2M) environment. With LWM2M, OMA has responded to demand in the market, understanding that a common standard for managing lightweight and low power devices on a variety of networks is necessary to realize the potential of IoT.

Space is limited to the first 30 pre-registered attendees to arrive on site May 6 at The Royal Society of Edinburgh 22-26 George St, Edinburgh, Midlothian EH2 2PQ, Edinburgh.

About Open Mobile Alliance (OMA)

OMA is the leading industry forum for developing market driven, interoperable mobile service enablers. OMA was formed by the world's leading mobile operators, device and network suppliers, information technology companies and content providers as the industry focal point for the development of mobile service enabler specifications. OMA is a non-profit organization that delivers open specifications for creating interoperable services that work across all geographical boundaries, on any bearer network. OMA's specifications support the billions of new and existing terminals across a variety of wireless networks, including traditional cellular operator networks and emerging networks supporting machine-to-machine device communications for the Internet of Things (IoT). New work in OMA is leading to the development of next generation mobile services in areas such as Device Management, LBS, IoT, APIs and more. See www.openmobilealliance.org.
