Howard Snyder Returns to Harriman as Landscape Architect

Former employee of The Cecil Group brings extensive public and private sector experience

BOSTON, MA, March 30, 2016 – Harriman and The Cecil Group, a newly merged architecture, engineering, urban design, planning, and landscape architecture firm with offices in Portland and Auburn, Maine, Manchester, New Hampshire, and Boston, Massachusetts, are pleased to announce that Howard Snyder, RLA, CLARB has rejoined the firm as a landscape architect. He will be based in the firm’s Boston office working on a range of landscape architecture and planning projects, and will immediately be involved with a playground design for a Jewish Community Center in Portland; construction administration services for streetscape projects in Massachusetts; and campus master planning for University of Maine at Farmington.

Harriman offers landscape architecture and land planning services to public and private clients through its Boston-based urban design and planning studio. The firm is committed to increasing public enjoyment of open space, orchestrating gatherings in multi-use spaces, and increasing economic vitality in downtown settings. The firm’s staff has the unique ability to harmonize practical requirements with creative design solutions that increase the value and thoughtfulness of space, and help clients realize a higher return on investment from their properties. The firm offers a range of design and planning services including land planning for large-scale developments, site planning for elements within established properties, streetscape design, master planning for open spaces and recreation facilities, and park design.

Howard was a landscape architect at The Cecil Group from 2002 to 2005. “It is great to have Howard rejoin our landscape architecture and planning team,” said Steve Cecil, AIA, ASLA, founding principal of The Cecil Group, Inc. and now a principal and owner at Harriman. “He adds experienced leadership for our large-scale projects and designs delightful spaces.”

Most recently, Howard was Town Planner for the Town of Georgetown, Massachusetts. In this position, he oversaw the planning for, and development of, land uses in a rural community facing suburban development pressures and needs. Concurrently, he founded and was principal of Amory Land Design in Newburyport, Massachusetts. The firm provided landscape architecture and planning services to private and corporate clients for projects ranging from residential design to community wide planning in communities from Boston to Portland, Maine. Prior to his work based in the North Shore of Massachusetts, Howard served as a project director of landscape architecture and urban design for eGroup, Inc. While the firm was based in Phoenix, Arizona, Howard directed project teams in various satellite offices on project types including resort, mixed-use, residential, and multi-residential developments across the Southwest.

Howard is a registered landscape architect in the states of New Hampshire, Massachusetts, and Arizona. He is a member of the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA), the Boston Society of Landscape Architects (BSLA), the American Planning Association (APA), and the Congress for New Urbanism (CNU). Howard has served on the Zoning Board of Appeals and the Planning Board in Newburyport, Massachusetts where he currently resides.

Howard holds a Bachelor of Landscape Architecture from The State University of New York (SUNY), College of Environmental Science and Forestry and a Master of Urban Planning and Public Policy from the Robert F. Wagner Graduate School of Public Service at New York University (NYU).
