Burning Man's Largest Independent Art Installation Lights Up the Playa

Lighthouse Project Guides the Way Home

OAKLAND, Calif., March 9, 2016 — (PRNewswire) — Black Rock Lighthouse Service, a massive art installation being developed for the international art and music festival, Burning Man, by a father-son team and group of experienced artists and builders, has been named as a Burning Man Honoraria recipient. This ambitious team of more than 100 professional artists, architects and builders are embarking on a major fundraising campaign to support the creation of an iconic series of lighthouses, climbing structures, fire and visual effects, and guest installations by some of the biggest names in the Burning Man art world.

"We're thrilled to be working with such an incredible caliber of people to make this project come to life. For more than 5 years my dad Jonny and I have dreamed of building the Lighthouses," said Max Poynton, co-lead artist who with his father Jonny, another highly experienced designer and builder, is overseeing the project. "We now have artists, architects and designers who are donating their time and resources to make the lighthouse one of the most incredible projects the Playa has even seen. It's going to be gorgeous, spectacular, something people have never experienced."

The team will create a cluster of lighthouses emerging from the desert at different angles, like quartz crystals, ranging in size from 60 feet to 15 feet. Each lighthouse will provide a beacon of either rotating light or fire in order to guide festival-goers and help them to navigate the Playa.

With elevated viewing platforms people will be able to view the art from multiple vantage points. Strangers will meet, take shelter, explore, and enjoy the structure. Through interacting with the piece, viewers become participants; sliding down the Helter Skelter, turning gears, and by using the piece as a meeting place. One of the lighthouses will draw inspiration from the smaller cluster of lighthouses that Max, Jonny and team are building for Afrikaburn 2016.

Kinetic Fire Art will burn the piece making it a temporary installation only available to interact with for the week of the playa. But to realize this ambitious artistic vision, the Black Rock Lighthouse Service will have an equally aggressive private fundraising push.
