VIRGINIA DOT CONTINUES RELATIONSHIP WITH FUGRO TO MEET EVOLVING PAVEMENT MANAGEMENT NEEDS

The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) has awarded Fugro Roadware a five-year contract for pavement data collection and evaluation services. Fugro is gathering, evaluating and assembling condition data for pavement assets across the State of Virginia. Data collection, which began in the fall of 2015, includes interstate, primary and secondary pavement sections. This continuing relationship with Fugro lets VDOT work with a project team familiar with their roads, processes and needs. Ensuring year over year consistency with past data collection projects is crucial to making accurate road treatment decisions and allows VDOT to maximize the value from their annual road maintenance budget. Fugro continues helping VDOT revise and improve their pavement management strategy and quality procedures by leveraging its strong understanding of network level data collection and technologies. This partnership includes collaboration on data collection, analysis and quality assurance as well as pavement engineering; all of which give VDOT the tools to successfully continue its pavement rehabilitation planning efforts over the next five years.

The contract is executed out of Fugro’s Richmond, Virginia office and led by a dedicated project manager, a native of Virginia, who has in-depth knowledge of VDOT’s requirements. This allows for continual face-to-face, on site interaction throughout the contract. Raja Shekharan, Pavement Management Program Engineer with Virginia DOT stated, “We look forward to continuing our work with Fugro over the next few years to efficiently manage Virginia’s pavement assets.” Since 2005, Fugro’s Automatic Road Analyzer (ARAN) has collected VDOT’s pavement data on an annual cycle. The ARAN, a fully integrated data collection vehicle, is designed to meet the VDOT requirements, collecting everything from roughness, rutting, pavement surface condition and geometric data to forward facing high definition video images. Pavement distress analysis is conducted using Fugro’s Pave3D system including automated crack detection.

VDOT will leverage the continued investment for data processing and viewing by using Fugro’s Vision and iVision software. Using simply a browser and an internet connection, iVision allows VDOT`s team a convenient method to view full size images and data on all routes across their network. They can access maps for locational reference and create customized charts. With VDOT continuing to use iVision, data-based decisions can continue uninterrupted. With investments maximized, VDOT can appropriate the required funds for pavement rehabilitation projects in the future, thereby creating better roads for Virginia drivers.
