Turbulent/NFB's VR experience, The Unknown Photographer, has US premiere at the 2016 Sundance Film Festival

MONTREAL, Dec. 14, 2015 — (PRNewswire) —  National Film Board of Canada (NFB) - The Unknown Photographer, created by Loïc Suty from Turbulent and co-produced with the National Film Board of Canada (NFB), will make its US premiere in the New Frontier section at the 2016 Sundance Film Festival. The Sundance Film Festival takes place January 21 to 31 in Park City, Salt Lake City, Ogden and Sundance, Utah. The Festival is one of the world's premier places to debut new independent films, and over the course of its more than 30-year history has launched films including WhiplashBoyhood, and Beasts of the Southern Wild, among many others. Created by Sundance Film Festival in 2007, New Frontier brings together fiction, non-fiction and hybrid projects to showcase transmedia storytelling, multi-media installations, performances and films.

The Unknown Photographer is one of the first virtual reality (VR) works in the world to offer an immersive, 20-minute narrative and visual experience. This documentary/fiction hybrid takes viewers into the fragmented memories of a First World War photographer, giving new life to more than 260 long-lost images, as participants stroll through a vivid 3D dreamscape featuring otherworldly structures and allegorical characters. Inspired by a photo album discovered in an abandoned barn north of Montreal, The Unknown Photographer is a visceral, moving work that's both fascinating and unsettling, prompting reflection on the power of imagery and the ravages of war.

"Building this VR experience marked a significant turning point for us," said Claire Buffet, Turbulent producer. "We harnessed tremendous talent and all of us learned a lot about this new medium. We'll be making sure to turn what could be a mere trend into a meaningful and reliable expertise."

"At our Digital Studio in Montreal, we have a particular emphasis on collaborating with this city's dynamic interactive sector―as exemplified by our great co-producer on this project, Turbulent," said Louis-Richard Tremblay, NFB producer. "The NFB has been a pioneer in storytelling throughout its history, with cutting-edge film technologies and now, new interactive and immersive formats. VR is the natural next step for us, and we're excited to be back at New Frontier this year."

In November 2015, The Unknown Photographer was showcased at both the Montreal International Documentary Festival (Rencontres internationales du documentaire de Montréal – RIDM) and IDFA 2015 DocLab in Amsterdam.
