UC Berkeley Held 3D Printing Designathon Themed with Assistive Tech

BERKELEY, Calif., Nov. 23, 2015 — (PRNewswire) — Recently on November 14th and 15th, UC Berkeley held their largest 3D Printing Designathon yet with over 100 students participating to help create 3D printed conceptual solutions for AT (Assistive Technology) devices that could improve the daily life of people with disabilities. Held at the school's Sutardja Dai Hall, the event was hosted by several engineering design oriented organizations at the university including Shapetizer, the 3D Modeling Club, EnableTech, and Biomedical Engineering Society.

Awarded works at 3D Printing Designathon

The 3D Printing Designathon was held this semester to commemorate the 25th Anniversary of the American Disabilities Act. Working with EnableTech (Engineering for Accessibility), the 3D Printing Designathon brought in several volunteers that gave information on both their specific disability and the general difficulties faced in everyday life.

By 10:00 AM, the following morning, 27 different teams had finished their designs and prototypes in order to present at the 3D Printing Designathon showcase. The judging panel included representatives from Autodesk, Shapetizer, Northrop Grumman, Pocketme, Eucled, and you3Dit.

Participants also took part in voting, as they were asked to choose their favorite project from among their peers' designs. Team BioKneek took home the 1st place judge vote while Team Exo-Mouse took home the 1st place popular vote. The first place winners each took home a Printrbot 3D printer, while the other teams could choose from a prize pool of a PocketMe full scan and print of each member, a $250 cash prize and a Eucled Customized Colored Trophy.

Here is a list of all the teams that participated in this 3D Printing Designathon:

  • Biokneek
  • Exo-Mouse
  • Leinadworks
  • DA
  • PlugAssist
  • LOOKS ABOUT RIGHT
  • Team Rocket (aperture)
  • 3Design Solutions (Swiss arm)

The event practically doubled in size from the previous semester even with a difficult prompt, proving that these students do not shy away from a challenge, especially when it involves helping others. Although the teams came up with conceptual solutions, some will continue to work on their models and print updated versions of their designs. 3D Printing allows anyone to create objects and tools that can simplify people's life. The 3D Printing Designathon has partnered up with Shapetizer, a 3D printing marketplace of high quality designs and projects, in order continue this belief by uploading several of these projects so that anyone who has a use for them can print them as well.
