Optomec Showcases Smart IoT Devices Produced by Its Customers at Printed Electronics Event

Conformal Sensors, Antennas and Circuitry Printed onto 3D Structures Show Real World Applications

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — (BUSINESS WIRE) — November 17, 2015 — Optomec, a leading global supplier of production grade additive manufacturing systems for 3D printed electronics and metals, announced today that the company will showcase smart electronic devices printed by several of its Aerosol Jet customers at the IDTechEx Printed Electronics USA Conference held November 18-19 at the Convention Center in Santa Clara, California. The smart devices include conformal antennas, sensors, heaters, EM shielding, and MEMs packaging produced by Optomec customers including United Technologies, Quest Integrated, Neotech Services, Fraunhofer, Florida State University and the University of Massachusetts. In addition Optomec will feature a live demonstration of its Aerosol Jet 200 benchtop printer in booth D10, on “Manufacturing Street.”

Optomec Aerosol Jet technology is used by a wide variety of industries to directly print functional electronic circuitry and components onto low-temperature, non-planar substrates, without the need for masks, screens or plating. Optomec 3D printed electronics solutions are based on its industry proven Aerosol Jet technology for printing conformal electronic circuitry and components onto 3D structures. The Aerosol Jet process utilizes an innovative aerodynamic focusing technique to collimate a dense mist of material-laden micro droplets into a tightly controlled beam to print features as small as 10 microns or as large as several millimeters in a single pass. A wide assortment of materials can be printed with the Aerosol Jet system including conductive nano-particle inks, polymers and epoxies, along with dielectrics, ceramics, and bio-active materials. Aerosol Jet systems are currently in use for high volume, 24X7 production of consumer electronic devices.

In addition to the Exhibition, Mr. Ken Vartanian, Vice President of Marketing at Optomec, will give a presentation titled “A Hybrid Approach to Accelerate Adoption of Metal 3D Printing.” Mr. Vartanian will discuss the America Makes program which funded development to combine Optomec laser metal additive technology with legacy CNC machine tools. Information will be presented on how an Optomec-led team retrofitted a 1990s vintage Fadal Vertical Mill with an Optomec LENS Print Engine enabling metal additive and metal subtractive operations to be performed on the same part, and on the same machine tool. A roadmap for further enhancement of Hybrid machining technology will also be presented. For more information on Optomec 3D printers, click here.
