Simpleware present Animations Contest winners

Exeter, UK, November 11, 2015 - Simpleware are proud to show the winning results of its 2015 animations contest, which demonstrates innovative work from users of its 3D image visualisation, analysis and model generation software suite ScanIP. First prize went to Dr David Ackland of the University of Melbourne for his image data of a blue-ringed octopus, one of the world’s most venomous marine animals.

The micro-CT image data provided of the octopus displays an outstanding level of detail, including the venomous gland, ink sac and brain. Ackland received an animation of his image data and a 3D printed model. The model was produced by 3T RPD in standard Nylon 12 with a “vibro” finishing and a permanent “Baby blue” surface colouring.

Dr. Ackland commented: “Investigating the morphology of the blue-ringed octopus was part of a McCoy seed-funded collaboration between the University of Melbourne and Melbourne Museum. The animation will be used as part of a museum display on cephalopods, together with the 3D printed model. The display will showcase the application of micro-CT in discerning internal anatomical features of tiny animals at high resolution.”

Dr. Ross Cotton, Simpleware senior application engineer and contest judge, remarked: “We were delighted with the quality and diversity of the entries for the animations contest. The winning entry demonstrates the advantages of using computed tomography whereby we can see the fascinating complex internal structures of a marine animal that would not otherwise be possible. The final animation hopefully does justice to the quality of the image data but also demonstrates the capabilities of ScanIP for visualising volumetric image data.”

Animations were also produced for Aaron Drake of Colorado State University for his submission of a bighorn sheep skull and horns, and to Ricardo Alvarez Merel of the Ohio State University for his entry of an aluminium matrix composite with embedded ceramic fibres.

The contest was designed to demonstrate the many possibilities for creating outstanding visualisations of 3D image data acquired from scanning sources such as computed tomography (CT) and micro-computed tomography (micro-CT).

Simpleware are planning to run similar contests in the future. The winning animations can be viewed on the Simpleware YouTube Channel.

About Simpleware

Simpleware develops industry-leading software solutions for the conversion of 3D images (as obtained from MRI, CT, micro-CT...) into high-quality Computer-aided Engineering (CAE), Computer-aided Design (CAD) and 3D printing models. Simpleware software is used by engineers and researchers in a variety of fields, including: Life Sciences, Materials Science, Oil and Gas Exploration, Industrial Non-Destructive Evaluation and Reverse Engineering. Simpleware software is based on proprietary technology that facilitates the integration of image data with CAD and computational analysis (finite element and computational fluid dynamics) workflows. Unlike other approaches, Simpleware provides the most comprehensive software solution for bridging 3D image data and commercial CAE solvers, CAD packages, and 3D printing.
