Export and Government Relations – Supports the interests of EDA suppliers and customers in matters pertaining to product export.
The past three months have been busy for those of us paying attention to export regulations. A flurry of requests for comments from the Departments of Commerce (BIS) and State (DDTC) on proposed changes to the regulations led to many discussions about how the changes could affect our industry, and how best to respond.
Two items in particular to highlight. The Wassenaar Arrangement, (a committee that sets export guidelines adhered to by 40 countries including the US), issued regulations on
Intrusion Software. The intent is to block the distribution of software and technology that can be used by hackers and criminals intent on causing harm via the web. However the regulation as proposed would impose export restrictions on the use of the monitoring technology that companies use to thwart such hacking and disruption. After a flurry of comments, including a letter submitted by the EDAC export team, BIS has halted adoption of the regulation in the US, and is studying bringing back the subject to Wassenaar for a review.
The EDAC export committee also filed a letter against a proposal, that if adopted will have EVERY company who physically exports products needing to change the required “destination control statement” on their export paperwork. The jury is still out on this one, however we are hopeful that BIS will fine-tune their proposal from the broad-based approach they have initially taken.

Interoperability – Drives EDA standards and quality for the benefit of the industry.
The Interoperability Committee continues to address the status of various operating systems and their applicability to EDA.
The committee is looking at upcoming releases of RHEL and SUSE, as well as Windows 10. We have also investigated other popular Linux operating systems, focusing on issues important to EDA vendors and customers. This includes stability, long term support, compatibility, and other issues. We also conducted a survey amongst member companies regarding remote display software.
Be sure to check the
EDAC OS Roadmap for the latest information as you plan upcoming projects and purchases.

License Management & Anti-Piracy – Provides a forum for members to identify and solve software licensing and piracy problems common to EDA vendors and their customers.
The LMA committee continued our ongoing discussions with our mutual enterprise customers, represented by CELUG. Currently these discussions focus on the topics of HostID duplication and high availability. The key issue is the EDA provider's desire to address the issue of HostID duplication while being sensitive to the customer's key concerns, which include high availability.
The committee meets via webinar each month to discuss key issues, and to hear from licensing and anti-piracy vendors. In July, new EDAC member SmartFlow Solutions presented it's solutions to the committee.
