Retail businesses who pre-order the reader will be enrolled in Shopify’s Liability Shift Protection Program

OTTAWA, Canada — (BUSINESS WIRE) — September 25, 2015Shopify Inc. (“Shopify”) (NYSE: SHOP) (TSX: SH), a leading cloud-based multichannel commerce platform, today announced the launch of its new credit card reader that will allow Shopify merchants in the U.S. to securely accept chip and pin, tap, and swipe credit and debit cards as well as contactless payment technologies like Apple Pay™.

The new card reader is designed for Shopify POS, the company’s iPad® and iPhone® point of sale system used by merchants in retail and pop up stores. Ordering the new credit card reader will allow merchants to prepare for the credit card industry’s October 1, 2015 EMV liability shift. “We want to make it easy for our merchants to accept any type of payment,” Guy Poirier, Retail Product Lead at Shopify. “With our new card reader, our merchants will be able to accept all of the most popular forms of payment available on the market today.”

All U.S.-based merchants that pre-order the new card reader will be enrolled in Shopify’s Liability Shift Protection Program. This protection program covers merchants against fraudulent chargebacks made using Shopify’s existing swipe credit card reader until the new card reader is received.

Shopify merchants can pre-order the new card reader today for $99, and accept credit cards with rates as low as 2.2%. For more information, please visit: www.shopify.com/pos/emv
