The American Society of Landscape Architects Applauds the Surgeon General’s Call to Action on Promoting Walking and Walkable Communities

Washington, D.C., September 9, 2015 - The American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA) supports the U.S. surgeon general’s call to actionpromoting walking and walkable communities. It recommends critical actions key sectors can take to improve walkability and encourage walking in the U.S., where physical inactivity contributes to 10 percent of preventable mortality.

“ASLA commends the surgeon general’s call to action,” said Nancy Somerville, Hon. ASLA, executive vice president and CEO of ASLA. “Landscape architects are proud to play a role in leading the planning and design of our environments, which include healthy, walkable communities.”
