Open Ethernet Gains Industry Momentum with Large Eco-System Demonstration Including Microsoft, Dell, Metaswitch, and Mellanox

Mellanox Open Ethernet™ switch systems deliver choice, performance and flexibility to enable the most cost-effective cloud, web2 and enterprise infrastructure

SUNNYVALE, Calif. & YOKNEAM, Israel — (BUSINESS WIRE) — August 19, 2015 — Mellanox® Technologies, Ltd. (NASDAQ: MLNX), a leading supplier of high-performance, end-to-end interconnect solutions for data center servers and storage systems, today announced the participation of its Ethernet switch solutions in a large Azure Cloud Switch (ACS) with SAI demonstration at the London SIGCOMM conference. Mellanox, Microsoft, Dell, Metaswitch and other companies will demonstrate a complete cloud solution based on Open Ethernet switches and software, as well as multi-vendor interoperability. Open Ethernet delivers choice and flexibility enabling the most cost effective Ethernet data centers, allowing users to innovate on top of the network infrastructure.

The demonstration will include Mellanox Open Ethernet switch solutions, and the Open Compute Project (OCP) Switch Abstraction Interface (SAI) software. SAI enables applications and Ethernet protocol stacks to operate seamlessly over any Open Ethernet compatible switch hardware platform. Mellanox is the first to deliver open-source SAI layer, as an integral part of its Ethernet switch systems.

“Mellanox is the leader in Open Ethernet solutions, which provide the freedom to choose the hardware and the software for best data center return on investment,” said Gilad Shainer, vice president of marketing at Mellanox Technologies. “We see SAI as a key element in achieving this goal, and being a SAI co-author from its inception, we are glad to see more vendors in the community adopting the SAI generic API as the interface for open switching software solutions. Open Ethernet is the key not just for reducing data centers CAPEX and OPEX, but also for enabling innovations and competitive advantage for users and applications.”

“Microsoft continues to lead the Switch Abstraction Interface in OCP and values Mellanox’s contribution in increasing the eco-system,” said Kamala Subramaniam, Principal Architect, Azure Networking at Microsoft. “With more products from more partners, we can build more flexible and innovative networking solutions for the cloud while controlling cost and improving performance.”

“As the leading network software provider, Metaswitch is pleased to work with Mellanox and other great companies to promote cloud-based solutions and the increased use of open architectures to help network operators build more powerful, flexible networks,” said Andy Randall, general manager of Metaswitch’s networking business unit. “We think demonstrating SAI in a multi-vendor environment will enable network operators to see how they can become more software-centric, spend less time on switch configuration and more time on building great services for their customers.”

The demonstration will be held at SIGCOMM on August 20th during the industrial track, and will showcase link and protocol level interoperability between different silicon, hardware and, software products.
