NASA Deputy Administrator Visits Langley, Views Boeing ecoDemonstrator Aircraft

WASHINGTON, June 15, 2015 — (PRNewswire) — The Boeing ecoDemonstrator 757 test plane will be at NASA's Langley Research Center in Hampton, Virginia Thursday, June 18 to celebrate its partnership with NASA in testing innovative green aviation technologies. Dava Newman, NASA's new Deputy Administrator, also will be at Langley to meet with center employees and tour the aircraft.

Media are invited to see the ecoDemonstrator aircraft, talk with NASA researchers about experiments flown on the aircraft, and meet Newman. Interested media should contact Kathy Barnstorff at 757-864-9886 or Email Contact no later than 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, June 17 and arrive at the Langley gate at 2 Langley Blvd. by 9:15 a.m. Thursday.

Displays will be set up highlighting three research projects NASA conducted using two Boeing ecoDemonstrator aircraft. Two research projects include the just-completed tests of non-stick coatings formulated to reduce bug guts from sticking to aircraft wings, and tiny devices installed on an aircraft's vertical tail to control the flow of air on demand, thereby allowing for smaller tails. Both technologies are part of NASA's Environmentally Responsible Aviation Project to reduce aircraft fuel consumption and emissions.

A NASA project tested last year on the ecoDemonstrator was computer software that can more precisely space aircraft in our national airspace, improving flight efficiency and reducing environmental impacts of aircraft, especially on communities around airports.
