Silicon Publishing Integrates Adobe Experience Manager and InDesign Server in New Ways

SAN FRANCISCO — (BUSINESS WIRE) — May 5, 2015 — Adobe Experience Manager (AEM), and Adobe InDesign Server (IDS) are keystones of the Marketing Cloud and Creative Cloud, both with solid enterprise user bases. AEM is fast becoming the system of choice for web content management among large organizations, while for over a decade, IDS has been the leading composition engine for online editing solutions and document automation. Silicon Publishing, an Adobe partner for more than 15 years, continues integrating these two products in innovative and market-leading ways.

Print Meets Web

Although AEM and IDS share a common parentage, they are starkly different in nature, only recently starting to enjoy deep integration. Think of IDS as the server equivalent of desktop InDesign. It has a very direct and targeted mission: rendering high-quality print output through a purely automated process.

On the other hand, AEM is broader in scope, offering a variety of features in addition to its core web content management capability: these include a workflow engine as well as asset management and integration with the robust analytic capabilities of the Adobe Marketing Cloud.

Asset Management: The Obvious Solution

In 2010, Silicon Publishing first bridged these two technologies with what was then, and remains today, the most direct solution linking InDesign with digital assets managed in AEM: Silicon Connector. By means of secure, direct, URL-based links, Connector enables large workgroups to manage graphics for print in the AEM repository.

For users of InDesign (desktop or server), Connector provides a powerful and efficient means of bringing AEM’s asset management strengths to bear. This has been demonstrated for years by many of the top InDesign workgroups around the world.

Multi-channel Publishing: the New Frontier

As early as 2010, Silicon Publishing began fielding requests for more comprehensive integration between AEM and IDS. AEM users up and down the line continually asked: “how can we manage content for web and print in the same way?”

Over the past five years, Silicon Publishing’s solutions have closed in on this holy grail of multi-channel publishing. Because AEM and IDS are so highly extensible, the company is now building solutions that bring a deeper level of integration. CEO Max Dunn states, “By using content in the Java Content Repository - the core of AEM - as a unified source for both web and print, we can combine the web content management capabilities of AEM with IDS print output through Silicon Paginator.”

The results are very promising, and Silicon Publishing expects to deploy a number of Paginator integrations with AEM over the coming year.
