IIDA Georgia Selects Savannah College of Art and Design's SCADpad Micro-Housing Community as b.o.b Forum Design Award Winner

Winning project showcased delightful yet practical design

ATLANTA, March 27, 2015 — (PRNewswire) —   Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) announced today that its SCADpad micro-housing community won the 2015 b.o.b. (Best of the Best) Forum Design Award in the residential category at the International Interior Design Association (IIDA) Georgia Chapter's annual event. The b.o.b. Awards recognize excellence in design and promote creativity in the Georgia design community.

SCADpad, a micro-housing experiment that transformed the midtown Atlanta parking structure of the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) into a sustainable community, won the b.o.b. (Best of the Best) Forum Design Award in the residential category at the International Interior Design Association (IIDA) Georgia Chapter’s annual event on Thursday, March 26. Each SCADpad unit featured design themes inspired by SCAD locations: Asia, Europe and North America. This SCADpad North America interior has two felted gray walls with surfaces featuring leather strips affixed in a Navajo pattern, rendered in a classic, American palette.

Addressing the world's growing urban housing challenges, the adaptive reuse project transformed the parking structure of SCAD's midtown Atlanta location into a sustainable community featuring three 135-square-foot micro-residences. Each of the fully functional and furnished SCADpad units fit within a standard parking space and included a private outdoor living space. The SCADpads showcased custom art installations from SCAD alumni on the interior and exterior of the micro-homes to create three design themes inspired by SCAD locations around the world: Asia, Europe and North America.

  • SCADpad Asia: Intended to reflect the culture and aesthetic of SCAD's Hong Kong location, SCADpad Asia featured a striking physical exterior designed by SCAD alumnus Will Penny (B.F.A. and M.F.A., painting). The inside walls were lined with geometric wallpaper overlaying a soundboard, also called human conductive wallpaper. When you touched the wallpaper, randomized musical sounds filled the space.

  • SCADpad Europe: SCADpad Europe was inspired by the medieval landscape and history of SCAD Lacoste. Designed by SCAD alumna Trish Andersen (B.F.A., fibers), the exterior of the SCADpad featured tonal blue lacquered wood panels resembling travertine tiles and scalloped copper tiles that bordered the roof. The inside of SCADpad Europe was adorned with interactive fiber walls woven from 40,000 pieces of fabric. Maximizing the small space, this SCADpad included a fold-up hammock bed, which accommodated a desk underneath.

  • SCADpad North America: Reflecting the American spirit of self-determination, SCADpad North America had a minimalist paint treatment on the exterior. The interior included two felted gray walls made by SCAD students, and other surfaces featured tiny leather strips affixed in a Navajo pattern and rendered in a classic, American palette. This installation was created by Marcus Kenney, a SCAD alumnus (M.F.A., photography).

"This interdisciplinary project called upon the expertise and critical thinking of current students, alumni and SCAD professors from 12 academic degree programs to develop innovative and tangible design solutions," said Christian Sottile, dean, school of building arts at SCAD. "Through the power of great design, SCADpad maximized small spaces to be highly intuitive and fully livable. The students focused on how well the space was utilized to delight the resident and found unique ways to maximize the 135 square feet to not only make it livable, but to create a work of art."

The annual b.o.b. Awards competition is open to any current or pending IIDA Georgia professional and student member. The awards were presented on March 26, 2015, at 200 Peachtree Street in Atlanta.
