Siemens offers Western University students opportunity to learn real-world technology with $522M software grant

OAKVILLE, ON, March 5, 2015 — (PRNewswire) —

OAKVILLE, ON, March 5, 2015 /CNW/ - Siemens and Western University have announced a new academic partnership that will give students the opportunity to use the same technology in its Faculty of Engineering classrooms that businesses around the world employ to design some of today's most sophisticated products.

The in-kind software grant, with a commercial value of more than $522M, includes Siemens PLM Software's NX™ software, a leading integrated solution for computer-aided design, manufacturing and engineering. Siemens PLM Software is a leading global provider of product lifecycle management (PLM) software and services for a wide variety of industries including automotive, aerospace, machinery, medical devices, shipbuilding and electronics.

Western Engineering students will use the sophisticated software for course work, research and other academic studies, thereby developing the advanced skills required by the more than 77,000 global customers who already utilize Siemens' software and technology solutions, including 29 of the world's top 30 automakers.

London, Ont.-based Longterm Technology Services Inc., a Siemens Channel Partner, worked closely with Western and Siemens PLM Software on this landmark partnership.

Siemens places great emphasis on collaboration with Canada's academic institutions. Since 2014, Siemens Canada has also signed seven memorandums of understanding with colleges and universities in Ontario and Alberta as part of the Siemens Canada Engineering and Technology Academy (SCETA). SCETA's aim is to provide enhanced certification and training for tomorrow's skilled workforce, fostering innovation and driving economic activity in Canada. MOUs currently exist with McMaster University, Mohawk College, Seneca College, Sheridan College, University of Waterloo, University of Alberta (Edmonton) and North Alberta Institute of Technologies (Edmonton).
