Slacker Unveils Redesign, Rolls Out the Future of Radio: Personalized Radio & a Platform for Creators

SAN DIEGO — (BUSINESS WIRE) — December 10, 2014 — Slacker Radio is redefining radio to match how we live now, in a post-social media era. Starting today, Slacker Radio is showcasing a complete redesign that pushes compelling artists, personalities and musicians to the forefront, and beginning to open its platform to creators, transforming the streaming music experience into a primary form of personal expression.

This month well-known online personalities and programs such as Tyler Oakley and Nerdist join Slacker Radio’s nearly 400 dedicated stations. Over time Slacker will expand the platform to new creative and compelling voices to curate and host more stations. To prepare for this next wave of curation and creation, Slacker Radio is rolling out a redesign for its website and mobile apps with a more modern look that focuses on helping people find or create the stations they want instantly. The new user interface is clean and highly customizable so that every station can be further fine-tuned by artist, song and genre, enabling listeners to make each station their own. Slacker’s new website and iPhone app are live today, Android launches for the holidays and other devices will soon follow.

“From the start, Slacker has been about the power of great radio, blending the best of human-curated programming with trusted voices and the ability to personalize your experience,” said Duncan Orrell-Jones, CEO, Slacker Radio. “Radio has always been important to audiences, but its personality got lost to corporate consolidation and an inability to keep up with the technology that listeners demand. Slacker is radio for the post social media & time-shifting entertainment era. Our next natural evolution is to broaden and dial up the authentic human touch by inviting more and more relevant, creative and celebrated voices to Slacker. We are bringing the next wave of talent to audiences through a truly interactive streaming platform.”

Kicking off the celebration of the creator platform in December, several culturally significant voices will be launching programs on Slacker Radio, bringing their unique sensibilities to the service with music and talk programming. YouTube sensations Tyler Oakley, Comic Book Girl 19 and the Rooster Teeth staff will be taking part in Slacker Radio’s “I Am The DJ” program and fresh content from Nerdist will be available on a dedicated channel.

  • Social media & web video superstar and youth role model Tyler Oakley is a huge music fan and often uses his channels to champion emerging artists. On his station, he will be playing pop gems from the likes of Lady Gaga, Tove Lo, Betty Who, Ariana Grande and many more. Tyler will also be talking about his favorite music, giving the scoop on how he got involved with YouTube, what it takes to become a video star, who he thinks is the next social media phenomenon and his first celebrity crush. Rooster Teeth begin broadcasting on Dec. 15.
  • Comic Book Girl 19, emerging video star, will bring her take on pop culture, comic books, fantasy, horror and a growing catalog of must-see movie reviews.
