The EU recently voted on a proposal to split up Google's search engine operations from it's other commercial services like AdWords and Google+ due to antitrust concerns. However, Google's dominance over the market has also angered European competitors due to a loss in revenue and mass firings.

Scott Darrohn, COO and Big Tuna at fishbat, a leading online marketing firm, says this decision raises concerns for other US companies that are dominating the European market. "If the European Parliament can break up Google, it could set a precedent for other corporations doing well overseas like Microsoft, Facebook, and Apple," he says. "Google controls about 90 percent of the search market in many countries. By separating its search service from it's other products, the European Union could exercise control over a huge American company."

As for SEO, Darrohn says the potential break up of Google services could have a big affect on rankings. "It's no secret that Google tends to prefer its own services," he says. "If the services are separated, companies that relied on integrating all Google products on their site might find their rankings dropping. The EU wants Google to treat all competitors equally, so SEO experts and online marketing companies will have to rework strategies.

While the decision does not have any binding legal weight, it is an influential factor for European lawmakers currently investigating Google's supposed antitrust violations, and investigation that has spanned the past four years. "Now that the European Competition Commissioner has heard the EU's plan, she can make a decision on how to proceed with the ongoing antitrust investigation and settlements with Google," he says. "It's a process that must be monitored by the US government and US corporations making strides in Europe."
