Semiconductor Industry Association (SIA) recognizes Altera CEO John Daane with prestigious Noyce award for his outstanding contributions to advancing the semiconductor industry.

"John represents the heart and soul of our industry, and we are pleased to recognize his efforts with this well-deserved award," said Brian Toohey, president and CEO of the SIA.  "During his tenure on the SIA Board and throughout his career, John has brought leaders together to tackle issues facing our industry and advance critical semiconductor priorities."

John Daane joined the SIA Board in 2003 and has been instrumental in furthering the association's efforts to impact policies favorable to the semiconductor industry.  During his tenure, the SIA has achieved several key policy accomplishments including major reforms to semiconductor export controls, significant strides towards the elimination of dangerous counterfeiting of semiconductor products, and duty-free treatment of the latest semiconductor products.  These and other accomplishments, help ensure the U.S. semiconductor industry remains the global market leader and continues to be one of the top contributors to U.S. economic growth.

"It is my honor to present the Robert N. Noyce Award to one of the semiconductor industry's greatest and most steadfast champions - John Daane," said Dr. John E. Kelly III. "With this award, John joins an elite group of innovators and industry champions. His outstanding leadership has advanced the semiconductor industry, created jobs and boosted economic growth."

Daane has served as Altera president and CEO since 2000 and was named Altera's chairman of the board in 2003.  Under his leadership, Altera has become an innovative powerhouse and has developed breakthrough programmable technologies for a wide range of markets, including communications, automotive, industrial and compute and storage.

As a supporter of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) education, Daane has directed Altera's support and financial contributions to educational organizations, helping grow the next generation of high technology leaders and innovators.  He also is a proponent of diversity in the workplace, recognizing that diversity of people and thought fosters innovation.

During his award acceptance speech, Daane called on SIA members to become more involved.  "We are facing major issues that will affect our industry's ability to stay competitive in a complex, shifting global market," noted Daane.  "We need to expand the number of semiconductor advocates, and I am calling on SIA members to get involved in today's agenda.  Help us advance the critical issues outlined in the SIA roadmap.  Get involved as a company or personally in supporting programs in the workplace. Only together can we ensure our success and ability to win over the long term."

Prior to joining Altera, Daane spent 15 years at LSI Logic, most recently as executive vice president of the Communications Product Group.  Daane earned a Bachelor's Degree from the University of California, Berkeley. The Noyce Award is the industry's highest honor and celebrates the legacy of Robert Noyce, co-inventor of the integrated circuit and co-founder of Fairchild Semiconductor, Intel, and the SIA.
