When it comes to using disruptive technologies to your advantage, the head of IT for healthcare distributor H.D. Smith shows InformationWeek how the cloud is paving the way to more personalized medicine.
NEW YORK, Sept. 17, 2014 — (PRNewswire) — For years, CIOs have tried to make sense of what cloud computing can really do. Is it truly the next stage of information technology? Is it a distributive trend that can change the way enterprises think? Is it just hype? For one CIO, however, the cloud is a perfect vehicle for solving a major problem: In a world where healthcare is more important than ever, how can you give patients a more personalized approach?
David Guzman, CIO of the healthcare product and service distributor H.D. Smith, is looking at the cloud as a way to radically change the way we think about the pharmaceutical supply chain, and the ways doctors and hospitals treat patients. In what could easily be mistaken for science fiction, Guzman envisions a world where tiny devices are injected into the patient that are tailored to his or her needs and medical history and can carry the needed medicine right to the source of the problem within the body.
"We're living in an age in which medicine is becoming much more preventive, more personalized, more prescriptive to your particular condition," says Guzman.
Guzman, and his views on healthcare, nanotechnology, and the cloud, are part of the first in a series of occasional articles on InformationWeek that look at disruptive CIOs, and how these men and women are changing the way people and businesses look at and use that technology.
The series is written by Peter Bendor-Samuel, the CEO of advisory and research firm Everest Group. Bendor-Samuel will interview a different CIO in each installment of this series, which will go behind the scenes to see how IT thought leaders view the future of technology, and how newer technologies, such as cloud computing, are changing enterprises in different fields.
If you are interested in hearing more from other CIOs who are using technologies to disrupt the old ways of doing business, there is still time to register to attend the 2014 Interop conference in New York City, which kicks off September 29 and runs through October 3 at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center.
The Interop conference offers a unique opportunity to help you connect with your IT colleagues, help your career take off, and learn how technology is changing the way business is done. There are only a few more weeks to register for the show. You can find more information about Interop New York and the show speakers, as well as the registration page, here.
