MDC Wins Innovation Award 2nd Year in a Row

Richmond, VA – Sep 17, 2014 -- On August 18, the Organization of Fish & Wildlife Information Managers (OFWIM) announced Missouri Department of Conservation’s (MDC) MO Hunting application as the winner of the Innovation Award.  This will be MDC’s second consecutive win for this fairly new category that began in 2013.  The Innovation Award is a combination of OFWIM’s two other awards, Best Web-based Technical Application and Best Collaborative Project.  Timmons Group partnered with MDC staff for all design and development tasks on MO Hunting.

MDC was formed by concerned citizens focused on conserving Missouri’s fish, forests, and wildlife.  MDC stresses the importance of restoring and regulating Missouri’s natural resources and encourages communities to aid in the conservation of the natural resources around them.

“We are honored to accept the Innovation Award for the second year in a row! Our mission has always been to keep the public informed about all things regarding wildlife, forestry, fisheries and preserving the natural habitats around us.  The applications developed with Timmons Group have bridged the gap of communication from our organization to the public.” Joe Kirby, MDC’s IT application development supervisor.

MO Hunting allows hunters to view their permits, register their harvests while in the field, and receive legal confirmation for their harvests. This can all be done conveniently on a smartphone, giving hunters better access to their data and enabling them to adhere more closely to hunting law.  MO Hunting was released to the Apple iTunes and Google Play stores in July.  Since its release, MO Hunting has also gained a spot on multiple media outlets.  WGEM News in Missouri recently featured it on its website in a short segment posted here: http://www.wgem.com/story/26438828/2014/09/03/missouri-department-of-conservation-offers-free-hunting-app.

MDC’s first Innovation Award winner was the Feral Hog mobile application which was focused on providing MDC resource protection staff with the ability to quickly report and track Feral Hog sightings in the state via smartphones.  Like MO Hunting, the Feral Hog application was developed in partnership with Timmons Group.
