Three new major features in the Optenni Lab matching circuit optimization software

Network analyzer interface, improved link with CST STUDIO SUITE and optimization of tunable matching circuits in Optenni Lab 3.0

Aug 14, 2014 -- Optenni Ltd announces a new version of the Optenni Lab™ matching circuit optimization and antenna analysis software featuring three major improvements to speed up the matching circuit design flow: a live interface to network analyzers, an improved link with CST STUDIO SUITE® and optimization of frequency tunable matching circuits.

The Optenni Lab matching circuit optimization software is built to help antenna engineers in their design work, which is becoming increasingly complex due to the growing number of radio systems, frequency bands and antennas. Especially the introduction of diversity and MIMO technologies and recently also tunable matching circuits increases the complexity of antenna design in mobile devices. At the same time, the mobile companies are striving to reduce the design times of mobile devices and to reduce the total antenna space.

Matching circuits are increasingly being used to reduce the design times and to increase the efficiency of antennas in mobile devices, catalyzed also by the availability of easy-to-use matching circuit design tools. With matching circuits, the impedance match and efficiency of antennas can be improved significantly faster than redesigning the physical antenna geometry. Moreover, with matching circuits, last-minute design changes can be easily incorporated to the devices.

After five years of intense development, Optenni Lab has become the leading professional matching circuit optimization software on the market, with many unique innovative features that are not found in any other software. With Optenni Lab 3.0, we have further added three major improvements to speed up the antenna design flow.

First, a live interface allows users to easily connect to network analyzers from Keysight Technologies (formerly Agilent Technologies) and Rohde & Schwarz. The interface allows the real-time optimization of matching circuits based on measured data and the real-time calculation of advanced antenna quantities such as bandwidth potential and electromagnetic isolation. The interface greatly increases the productivity of laboratory experimentation as the engineer can concentrate on the radiation properties of the antennas while the impedance matching is handled automatically by Optenni Lab. The network analyzer interface is a natural continuation of our strategy to build interoperability with other players in the wireless ecosystem, such as electromagnetic and circuit simulators.

Second, we have improved the existing interface to the CST STUDIO SUITE electromagnetic simulator in multiple ways. One of the most interesting new features is the simultaneous optimization of the electromagnetic structure (as calculated by CST MICROWAVE STUDIO®) and the matching circuits (as optimized by Optenni Lab). Also, parameter sweeps in CST MICROWAVE STUDIO can be combined with automatically optimized matching circuits and thus e.g. antenna placement studies with automatic re-matching can be easily carried out.

Third, Optenni Lab now supports the optimization of frequency tunable matching circuits and tunable filters employing e.g. tunable capacitors. The optimization of such tunable  circuits is a complex and challenging task as the best values of the tunable components must be found simultaneously with the values of the fixed components. Optenni Lab is the first tool to offer an easy way to optimize tunable matching circuits.

“Optenni Lab 3.0 is our most important update so far as it contains not just one, but three major development steps”, said Dr. Jussi Rahola, founder and CEO of Optenni Ltd. "We have received very enthusiastic feedback from our customers and technology partners about the new features which are helping our customers to reduce the design times of complex antenna systems. We are especially proud of the revolutionary support for tunable matching circuit optimization.”
