Wear Geared Inc. Developing ‘Museum Glasses’ on Epson Moverio Smart Glasses

Canada-based App Developer Demonstrating Augmented Reality-Based Wearable Technology at SIGGRAPH 2014 This Week

VANCOUVER, British Columbia — (BUSINESS WIRE) — August 12, 2014SIGGRAPH 2014, Booth 523 – Epson America today announced that Wear Geared Inc. has joined its Moverio Developer Program to provide interactive, dynamic new experiences for visitors to museums, art galleries, zoos, aquariums, theme parks and other tourist attractions.

Wear Geared’s “ Museum Glasses” platform is designed to take visitors beyond traditional audio guides to provide a more intimate and captivating story-telling experience using augmented reality-based video and gaming content on the Epson Moverio BT-200 smart glasses. The “Museum Glasses” app will be demonstrated this week in Epson Booth 523 at the SIGGRAPH Conference in Vancouver, August 12-14, 2014.

Powered by Blippar, a leading AR software company, Museum Glasses provides museums and other attractions an innovative technology platform to build and manage their own unique smart glasses content to enhance visitor interest and traffic. A dashboard of metrics allows attractions to measure engagement levels for each exhibit, creating a map tracking such data as number of exhibitor visitors, time of engagement, length of engagement, and more.

“Epson’s Moverio BT-200 smart glasses are binocular and transparent, allowing users to see and interact with digital content and their real-world surroundings, and are the perfect wearable technology platform for our Museum Glasses app,” said Michael Conyette, founder, Wear Geared Inc., based in Vernon, British Columbia, Canada. “Epson is taking augmented reality to the next level where users can experience these unique applications in a hands-free environment.”

“Epson is looking forward to working with Wear Geared to realize the full potential of its compelling application for the Moverio BT-200 smart glasses in the marketplace,” said Eric Mizufuka, product manager, New Ventures for Epson America, and Moverio developer program lead. “The Moverio BT-200 offers developers the opportunity to create exciting consumer and enterprise Android-based applications that take advantage of the platform’s unique ‘look-through’ transparent display capabilities.”

Wear Geared Inc. is a Canadian-based start-up company founded by business college professor Dr. Michael Conyette, DBA who recognized the opportunity for wearable technology devices in tourist attractions while conducting doctoral research into travel-related technology.

Blippar is the world’s leading visual browser, harnessing augmented reality and image-recognition technology to bring the physical world to life through smartphones, tablets and wearables.

Leveraging Epson’s patented core technologies, the Moverio BT-200 offers an unparalleled binocular smart glasses experience optimized for augmented reality applications. Micro projectors located on each side of the eyeglasses project transparent overlays of digital content directly in the user’s field of view over the real-world environment. In addition, the Moverio BT-200 glasses contain sensors such as a gyroscope, accelerometer and magnetic compass for head-motion tracking and hands-free navigation. A front-facing camera for video and image capture also detects real-world markers for augmented reality (AR) applications.

The Epson Moverio BT-200 smart glasses are available through select online retailers and direct from Epson for MSRP $699.99. For more information regarding the Moverio Developer Program, please visit the dedicated site here.
