Richmond, VA – July 1, 2014 Leveraging the success of the TxWRAP web portal developed by the Texas A&M Forest Service, The Southern Group of State Foresters (SGSF) teamed with Timmons Group to develop the South Wildfire Risk Assessment Portal (SouthWRAP).  SouthWRAP provides access to wildfire risk information and tools for mitigation planners and the public throughout 13 Southern states.

The web site provides custom web mapping applications for accessing the latest Southern Wildfire Risk Assessment (SWRA) data. The revised SWRA is a regional risk assessment recently completed by the Southern Group of State Foresters that provides updates for 11 of the 13 Southern states.  Results from previous assessments by Texas and Florida have been integrated to provide wall-to-wall coverage of the South.

The primary application, the Professional Viewer, provides a suite of tools focused on mitigation planners and WUI specialists. It provides capabilities for defining project areas, generating detailed risk summary reports, creating maps, and exporting data.  The Public Viewer is focused on creating awareness and education for the public, providing a subset of information and capabilities focused on identifying risk conditions for specific locations.

SouthWRAP offers readily accessible mapping information that will increase the knowledge of the public and government entities to be aware and prepare for their potential wildfire risk. It is the latest installment of a suite of tools supported by the US Forest Service, Region 8 and the Southern Group of State Foresters for preparedness and mitigation planning across the South.  For more information visit the site at www.SouthernWildfireRisk.com.
