London Airport Flies High with UKMap

Stansted Gains Access to The GeoInformation Group’s Detailed Asset Mapping

Cambridge, 1 July 2014 --  The GeoInformation Group, publishers of mapping and geospatial information products, has been awarded a contract by London Stansted Airport to deliver a mapping database of its air and landside assets.

Stansted required a single map source of thousands of its assets across its thousand hectare estate in support of its maintenance programme. This led the airport to select a customised version of UKMap, The GeoInformation Group’s highly successful, large scale mapping database of London.

Multiple client-specified assets were accurately mapped to a 1:1,000 scale including over 850 runway lights, 249 painted runway centre lines and 57 stop arrows as well as taxiways, stands and gates. The contract will also involve an ongoing, high-resolution aerial imagery capture programme that will include, for the very first time, a UAV survey next year.

London Stansted Airport’s Civils Operations Manager comments, “We have been impressed by the work undertaken by The GeoInformation Group which will assist our ground and civil maintenance programme to save time and money. The mapping will also potentially assist other areas of the business by identifying cost savings through more effective planning and delivery of maintenance, security, capital projects, biodiversity plans and more.”

Prior to receiving this database the assets were organised in a location-named hierarchy structure rather than georeferenced leaving the location of features open to staff misinterpretation resulting in wasted time and effort.

“The provision of an accurate map will be instrumental in providing our staff with a fully georeferenced record of our assets. What’s more, a consolidated, visual reference will not only provide effective access to all the information in one place but will also help to minimise ambiguity associated with an asset’s location”, concludes the airport’s Civils Operations Manager.

The UKMap-based database will enable the UK’s third busiest airport to move to a more proactive maintenance schedule that will support a host of applications, including; repairs scheduling, security, aircraft ground navigation and zoning.
