MakerBot Announces the MakerBot Developer Program for MakerBot-Ready Apps

Launches Program with Modio as the First MakerBot-Ready App

BROOKLYN, N.Y. — (BUSINESS WIRE) — June 19, 2014 — MakerBot, a global leader in desktop 3D printing, is excited to announce the MakerBot® Developer Program, created to encourage app and game developers to take their creations to a new level and include 3D printing capabilities in desktop, mobile, tablet, and console-based apps and games. Launching today, the MakerBot Developer Program will give developers unprecedented access to tools and resources to use the MakerBot Replicator® 3D Printing Platform for iOS, Android, Web, and more. To help kick-off this exciting opportunity, MakerBot is also announcing that Modio, a new 3D printing app for the iPad that allows users to design fully poseable creatures and characters and then 3D print them on a MakerBot Replicator Desktop 3D Printer, is the first MakerBot-Ready App and the first MakerBot Developer Program launch partner.

“We have been approached by developers for a long time who have tremendous ideas that they want to bring to life with 3D printing capabilities,” noted Bre Pettis, CEO of MakerBot. “The MakerBot Developer Program finally enables developers to create apps that are designed to work seamlessly with our MakerBot Replicator Desktop 3D Printers and live within the MakerBot 3D Ecosystem certified as MakerBot-Ready Apps. It will be very exciting to see what develops.”

The MakerBot Developer Program provides the tools and resources to integrate with the MakerBot 3D Ecosystem, giving developers access to the fast-growing 3D printing market. All MakerBot-Ready Apps will be certified to print easily on MakerBot Replicator Desktop 3D Printers, creating what MakerBot believes to be the ultimate collection of educational, entertaining and useful 3D printing applications.

Developers can create the hottest new games, 3D designs, characters, educational content and more, and have the unique ability to integrate a wide variety of 3D printable content seamlessly into the MakerBot 3D Ecosystem. As the app collection grows, MakerBot-Ready Apps will be indexed and searchable by category, making it easy to find new and exciting content for a MakerBot Replicator Desktop 3D Printer.

With Modio, the first MakerBot-Ready App, users seamlessly merge digital and analog play with features unlike anything the 3D printing industry has seen before. Modio enables anyone to create customizable designs of fully poseable creatures, robots and characters using a broad collection of interchangeable parts, templates and customization elements that provide unlimited play at the flick of a finger. The designs are created to work with MakerBot Replicator Desktop 3D Printers and to 3D print without any rafts or support material. To simplify the 3D printing process, the app also provides a unique 3D printing visualization interface that allows users to determine the size and layout of all the parts on the build plate of a 3D printer. Users can then simply upload their creations directly from the app to their MakerBot Cloud Library and 3D print them using the MakerBot Desktop App.

Modio will be showcased at the MakerBot Retail Stores in New York, Boston, and Greenwich, Connecticut, where visitors can make a Modio creation on an in-store iPad and then place an order right there to custom print it via the MakerBot Store In-Store 3D Print Service.

“Being the official launch partner of the MakerBot Developer Program is really exciting,” said Hilmar Gunnarsson, founder and CEO of Modio. “We introduced Modio to the maker community at the Bay Area Maker Faire last month and the response has been simply amazing. Now, to be able to come out and showcase the app’s intuitive 3D printing workflow and seamless integration with MakerBot is even more exciting and demonstrates our commitment to help make 3D printing as easy as possible.”
