Kentucky Utility Remains Compliant by Using Map-Based Field Inspection Software

Taking advantage of powerful new tools available for mobile devices and leveraging the power of cloud computing, Owen Electric has selected the geoOrganizer suite of software.

Owenton, KY, June 3, 2014 – Facing increasing regulatory pressures and the continuing inefficiency of paper maps and pens and the wasted hours they caused at all levels of the organization, Owen Electric Cooperative decided to find a better solution.  Their goal was to find a tool which would connect everyone with the same, up-to-date information.  They also wanted that tool to streamline their workflow and enable better response to issues at every level.

“Owen Electric was looking for a tool that would satisfy all of our requirements of being simplistic, fast, require minimal training, eliminate paper processes all while being accepted by the Kentucky Public Service Commission as meeting our inspection requirements.   GISbiz’s geoOrganizer’s suite of tools was the exact tool for which we were looking.”   Rusty Williams, Senior V.P. of Operations & Technology.

GeoOrganizer, developed by GISbiz, is the solution they selected.  Within that suite of software, geoFIT is a field inspection tool that allows field personnel to take advantage of mobile devices for both inspection and reporting.  It takes advantage of cloud computing to immediately connect the entire organization to the information the field personnel provide.  It also allows push notifications to be sent to the linemen, giving them far greater ability to respond to critical, time-sensitive concerns.

One of Owen Electric’s needs was a solution that would allow users to create inspections and service orders with a time and date stamp while also capturing the user’s identity and location. This would ensure that the utility was in compliance with Kentucky Public Service Commission.  This feature also helps if a legal situation arises where the utility needs to prove their people were onsite at the time of inspection. Furthermore, it would allow for reports to be later generated that showed whether field employees were at the asset location at the time of inspection.

Back at the office, the geoDASH component of the suite provides a dashboard for decision makers, allowing them to direct the workflow with efficiency.  It also produces reports for agencies like FEMA, RUS and others saving time and money.  All of the data is readily available for use by those who need it, and as a cloud solution there is no need for an IT department to service it.

GISbiz is a software solutions company specializing in Geospatial applications for over a decade.  GISbiz offers Mobile, Web and Desktop software solutions to Utilities, Government agencies and commercial organizations by utilizing the latest technologies from Apple, Microsoft, Google, Oracle and ESRI.
