Awarded to architecture students who demonstrate interest in architecture practice management

Washington, D.C. – March 13, 2014 – The American Institute of Architect (AIA) has selected Josh Gerloff and Mark Manczyk to receive the 2013 David W. Lakamp a/e ProNet Scholarship.  The program, initiated by ProNet, a national association of insurance brokers who are committed to providing liability insurance and loss prevention to architects, is awarded to architecture students who demonstrate a particular interest in the principles of management in architecture practice. Gerloff and Manczyk will both receive $2,500 to use towards their tuition.

Started in 1990 by a/e ProNet, the scholarship is open to third and fourth year undergraduates as well as graduate students of architecture enrolled in a NAAB- accredited professional degree program.  Submissions are reviewed by jury members of the AIA Practice Management Knowledge Community.  Candidates were graded on their transcripts, letters of recommendations, and an essay on how they would resolve a project management dilemma.

About the recipients:

Josh Gerloff is from Chesapeake, VA and is currently an architecture graduate student at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. He received his undergraduate degree in

Government from the University of Notre Dame.  Prior to graduate school, Gerloff worked with his family at Gerloff Painting, Inc. He also served on numerous community boards and commissions, culminating with an appointment to the Chesapeake Planning Commission. Gerloff found this planning commission experience to be most rewarding as he has strong interest in social issues and community engagement.  He hopes to fuse these interests with his architectural studies. Following graduate school, Gerloff will seek employment at an architectural firm and will pursue his NCARB registration.

Mark Manczyk will be completing his Bachelor of Arts in Architecture degree at the University of Kentucky in May 2014.  Manczyk, an honors student, has actively led student organizations as Co-Vice President of the American Institute of Architecture Students (AIAS) in 2012–2013 and, at present, as Secretary for the Tau Sigma Delta (ΤΣΔ) - Honor Society in Architecture and Allied Arts.  Manczyk has gained experience at several architecture firms including Bernard Tschumi (New York City, NY) and Centerbrook Architects (Centerbrook, CT). Currently, he is a Research Assistant at the University of Kentucky with Gregory Luhan, Associate Dean for Research, working to design modular, energy-efficient, and low-cost workforce housing, schools, clinics, and offices.

Started in 1990, the scholarship was renamed in 1999 for David W. Lakamp. Mr. Lakamp was a founder of a/e ProNet and a trusted advisor to the profession. He left behind a legacy of professionalism and integrity that set new standards in the field of insurance services.
