Esri Helps Alabama Power Company Stretch Its Lidar Data Investment across the Utility

Redlands, California February 4, 2014—Energy provider Alabama Power Company used Esri technology to move its valuable lidar data out of boxes and into the hands of more staff members, a move that is saving time and money for design, construction, maintenance, survey, and rights-of-way protection.

With more than 83,000 miles of power lines and a 44,500-square-mile service area, Alabama Power Company serves more than 1.4 million customers and has over 12,000 megawatts of generating capacity.

Alabama Power Company collects lidar data every year on its transmission system as part of its compliance with North American Electric Reliability Corporation requirements as well as for new line construction and rebuilds. When management wanted ways to derive more value from that data, the company's transmission services department contacted Esri.

Lidar represents a huge amount of data, and we wanted to make it consumable," said Matt Clarkson, GIS specialist at Alabama Power Company. "We worked with Esri to make lidar data available, self-service style, to departments within the company."

Alabama Power Company used Esri's ArcGIS software to process, manage, serve, and distribute its vast data stores.
