Students Compete To Be The Best by Using The Right Tools

November 27, 2013 - Burlington, Massachusetts - For the second year, the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronauts and the ASME International Gas Turbine Institute are co-launching their undergrad team competition for conceptual engine designs – and many of these undergrads will be using AxSTREAM.

SoftInWay, in partnership with Dr. Ian Halliwell, the coordinator for the event, is providing special free licenses for its design and optimization software to students involved in the competition. AxSTREAM EDU, an educational version of the company’s flagship software, provides students with a set of design tools equivalent to those used in industry, to enrich their educational experience.

This year’s engine design competition addresses candidate engines for a supersonic business jet, which would allow travel from Europe to North America and back within one business day. Up to twenty international student teams are expected to compete in the first round of the competition. They have until April 2014 to submit their proposals and the best three teams will be invited to present their work before a second panel of judges at the AIAA Propulsion & Energy Forum in July to determine the final finishing order.

“I taught gas turbine engine design for over 20 years and my classes always had to stop when we got to velocity diagrams because tools were not available that enabled detailed blade design to be considered within the duration of the course. AxSTREAM changed all that because it offered a rapid and easy way to look at blade shapes and the flow fields around them; it allows students to design 3-dimensional airfoils for multi-stage turbines and compressors,” said Halliwell.

AxSTREAM and its versions of AxSTREAM EDU and AxSTREAM Lite are currently implemented in over 40 university curriculums with over 1,000 users worldwide. This will be the second year that SoftInWay is partnering with Dr. Halliwell to provide free licenses to students who compete in the joint AIAA/ASME Team Engine Design Competition.
