Berico Technologies Releases Version 1.0 of Open Source Geoparser, CLAVIN

RESTON, Va. — (BUSINESS WIRE) — October 14, 2013Berico Technologies LLC announces the version 1.0 release of its award-winning open source software package, CLAVIN. This geospatial entity resolution tool extracts structured geo data from unstructured text documents, intelligently and automatically. CLAVIN stands for Cartographic Location And Vicinity INdexer. Creator and Product Manager Charlie Greenbacker said, “This release is the culmination of over 18 months of effort by a team of scientists and engineers at Berico, in addition to contributions from CLAVIN’s open source community. Version 1.0 represents a greater level of maturity and robustness, as well as an improvement in performance.”

CLAVIN automatically extracts location names from unstructured text and resolves them against a gazetteer to produce geographic entities. It handles misspellings, alternate names, and ambiguous references like “Springfield” or “Portland,” enabling advanced geospatial analytics on massive volumes of unstructured text. CLAVIN is fast, accurate, easy to use, and it scales to accommodate big data in the cloud.

CLAVIN 1.0 is ready for use in production and enterprise-wide deployments. CLAVIN is currently being used across multiple organizations within Berico’s traditional customer base, in addition to the MIT Center for Civic Media and various open source users around the world.

CLAVIN is available as open source software under the business-friendly Apache License. Berico Technologies also provides professional service and support for CLAVIN on a subscription basis. Options include enterprise installation, integration, customization, and advanced functionality not bundled as part of the open source distribution.

To download the source code or try out an interactive online demo, users can visit clavin.bericotechnologies.com or find CLAVIN on GitHub in one of Berico’s public code repositories. For convenience, binary packages for CLAVIN are also distributed through Maven Central.

The buzz continues to grow as word is spreading about this versatile product with a minimal cost. The Northern Virginia Technology Council recognized it as a winner of its 2013 “Destination Innovation” award.
