SMIC IP R&D Center Applies EDA Solution of Beijing Empyrean

SHANGHAI, Oct. 4, 2013 — (PRNewswire) —  Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corporation ("SMIC", NYSE: SMI and SEHK: 981), the largest and most advanced semiconductor foundry in mainland China, and Huada Empyrean Software Co. Ltc. ("Empyrean"), a global supplier of electronic design automation (EDA) and IP solutions, today jointly announced that SMIC's IP R&D center adopted Aeolus, a high-performance paralleled circuit simulation tool, along with other customized tools from Empyrean.

Aeolus is a parallel circuit simulation tool that can handle tens of millions of transistors and support post-layout simulation in nanometer process technology. The advanced, multi-mode, matrix equation solving technology combined with the multi-thread, parallel algorithm ensures the accuracy of simulation results and reduces the simulation time by several times. In addition, Empyrean provides in-depth customization service to enable SMIC to provide quality IP services, such as LibPlatform (the development platform of standard cell library) and MemoryCompiler (the development platform of memory compiling).

Josh Yang, Director of SMIC IP R&D Center, said: "Aeolus meets the requirements needed in advanced IP development. The tool proves to be a very efficient solution, along with Empyrean's strong domestic support. We are pleased to have an excellent partner like Empyrean. We hope to forge closer collaboration in the future, to provide better services to our customers."

Dr. Tianshen Tang, Senior Vice President of SMIC Design Services, said: "We are glad to see the improved quality and efficiency from the advanced tools and technologies developed independently by Chinese enterprises. With China's booming IC industry facing more challenges, the strong partnership of SMIC and Empyrean will benefit the Chinese IC ecosystem by driving more innovation and technology developments."

Kuangchien Chen, Technical Director of Empyrean, said: "We are honored to have the EDA tool and service of Empyrean adopted by world leading IC enterprises like SMIC. This is a strong indication that Chinese EDA technology has caught up with global leading providers. We will strengthen the collaboration between SMIC and Empyrean to provide high quality services to our mutual customers."

Ming Qin, Vice Marketing General Manager of Empyrean, said: "With the rapid development of Chinese IC design and manufacturing technology, cutting-edge EDA software tools and customized solutions are essential. We're glad to establish close collaboration with SMIC and offer our cutting-edge EDA software tool to the leading IC manufacturing enterprises in China. We believe our EDA tool and customized service will be adopted by more industrial partners both at home and abroad, and Empyrean will soon become a new symbol in the EDA industry."
