MINNEAPOLIS, USA, September 23, 2013 – After successfully delivering a Japanese to English translation of topographic maps over the tsunami-affected areas in the Sendai region in 2011, East View Geospatial (EVG) has been granted the exclusive rights to produce and distribute current English-Japanese bilingual topographic maps of 1:25,000 for the remaining areas of Japan by the Geospatial Information Authority of Japan (GSI).
Topographic maps in English covering the entirety of Japan at this level of detail have not previously been available. This agreement increases the availability of bilingual maps from eighteen to a full country coverage series of 4,350 sheets.
EVG’s Japanese language specialist utilized automated geoname conversion processes, and then meticulously checked and edited each identifying feature. “This dramatically widens map use, enabling non-Japanese speakers to utilize the national topographic maps of Japan,” said Kent Lee, EVG’s founder and CEO. “EVG is proud to work with GSI and produce this quality resource.”
Each raster/paper map is produced according to the requirements established by the GSI:
- Hill shading added to relief features
- Fully attributed: All feature names and attributes are in English, or Romanized, and in Japanese
- GSI approval notice statement and number included
- The English translation standardized, following a set of established rules
These maps are available in print and digital editions.
