A workplace between cloud and earth

August 3, 2013 -- A workplace between cloud and earth.  Specialists wanted in a dynamic industry.

Bright professional future for geodesists / “INTERGEO is the biggest job fair in the industry” / The Jobshaker brings together students, career entrants and employers.

Essen/Karlsruhe, 2 September 2013. The geo industry is facing increasing challenges. It spans a broad range of careers, yet there are not enough qualified specialists to be found. “The shortage of young recruits is most acute in the fields of geodesy and land management,” says Prof. Karl-Friedrich Thöne, President of the German Society for Geodesy, Geoinformation and Land Management (DVW. e.V.) and host of INTERGEO. Academia and administration are also competing with the usually better-paid positions in private industry when it comes to attracting the shrinking number of applicants, he adds. The high drop-out rate of 50% on engineering courses is having a particularly detrimental effect on the geo industry.

This is why attention will also be focused on attracting young people into the field at the 19th INTERGEO in Essen.  The Jobshaker’s new recruitment format is designed to encourage interested school pupils, students and career starters into informal discussions with employers about the many different job profiles that make up the geodata industry. First, the employers will describe their companies in short, personal statements, and then the young people get the chance to ask industry representatives any questions about careers and working conditions while enjoying some refreshments. Jobshaker’s Elisabeth Berg says that this “gives young people a chance to gain an unusually deep insight into the companies and careers in this field of work.”  The Jobshaker will run for two days in the career section of the Trend and Media Forum.

Universities and other higher education institutions will be delivering numerous presentations of scientific developments and providing information on courses of study and further training throughout INTERGEO. The DVW, German Association of Publicly Appointed Surveyors (BDVI) and German Association of Surveyors (VDV) will outline the various fields of work in the geo industry. “INTERGEO is the biggest job fair in the industry,” says DVW’s president Thöne, “and a must for career entrants and students.”

More information about the various lines of work and career openings can already be found at www.arbeitsplatz-erde.de.
