21st Century Smart Manufacturing: Information Drives a Profound Structural Shift in Production

Frost & Sullivan | Manufacturing Leadership Council draws a roadmap for smart manufacturing at Growth, Innovation and Leadership 2013: Silicon Valley

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., Aug. 15, 2013 — (PRNewswire) —  Smart Manufacturing (SM) ensures all information about the manufacturing process is available whenever and wherever needed as well as in the form required across entire manufacturing supply chains; complete product lifecycles; multiple industries; and small, medium and large enterprises. As this advanced approach to production transforms the industry, the focus is on establishing an open architecture with common protocols and standards to enable manufacturers of all sizes to dramatically improve overall interoperability, efficiency, speed, and effectiveness.

"Concepts and practices such as SM are mandatory disciplines for manufacturers grappling with how to leverage technology for a competitive advantage, as well as the need to continually improve efficiency and reduce costs," said Frost & Sullivan | Manufacturing Leadership Council (MLC) Global Vice President and Editorial Director David R. Brousell. "This is all within the context of the continual globalization of the manufacturing industry."

To help organizations learn about the SM concept and how it can be applied in specific environments, Frost & Sullivan | Manufacturing Leadership Council will host the "21st Century Smart Manufacturing: Information that Drives the Next Century's Structural Shift in Manufacturing" workshop at GIL 2013: Silicon Valley, The Global Community of Growth, Innovation and Leadership ( http://bit.ly/18Eo0fz), taking place Sept. 8-11 at The Fairmont in San Jose, Calif.  MLC has also organized the "Transformative Technologies in Manufacturing" Think Tank, which highlights key results from MLC's survey on manufacturers' attitudes toward transformative technologies and how they will evolve in the years ahead.

The "21st Century Smart Manufacturing" workshop, taking place Sept. 9 at GIL 2013: Silicon Valley, will enable manufacturing companies to gain a conceptual and practical implementation experience on SM.  The sessions within the workshop will provide varied insight for manufacturers, from establishing a business case for SM, to developing test beds for the concept.  The workshop opens with "The Vision of Smart Manufacturing" executive overview session, followed by "The Business Case: Smart Manufacturing Industry Priorities" executive panel, "An Open-Architecture Smart Manufacturing Platform" demonstration, and closes with the interactive "Collaborating to Build and Implement a Smart Manufacturing Infrastructure" session.

The workshop will highlight the SM systems of greatest value, and how they can be deployed more broadly. It will also include a demonstration of the technical features of the SM platform, as well as roundtables to explore business expansion, platform specification, as well as people and workforce development for the growth of SM.  Workshop speakers and panelists include senior-level management from the Smart Manufacturing Leadership Coalition, UCLA, General Dynamics, Alcoa, Praxair, the Center for Polymer Reaction Monitoring and Characterization, Nimbis, Spitzer and Boyes LLC, the Center of Smart Manufacturing Innovation, and General Mills.

On Sept. 10, the "Transformative Technologies in Manufacturing" Think Tank opens with a roundup of the results from the latest survey conducted by MLC to assess the attitudes of manufacturers on cloud computing, mobility, social media, and big data. The results will be further elaborated in the "Ask the Experts! Panel Discussion – From the Front Lines of Technology," which includes panelists from KLA-Tencor, Eaton Corp., Enterasys Networks, and Blue Jeans Networks.

GIL 2013: Silicon Valley presents a number of other industry-specific Think Tanks throughout the congress, taking place Sept. 8-11. Prior GIL: Silicon Valley participants include presidents, directors, C-level staff and others interested in the long-term growth of their organization. GIL 2013: Silicon Valley includes ice breaking workshops, interactive sessions, networking activities and luncheons, event kickoffs, exhibitions, demonstrations, executive insights and more.
