Nippon Steel & Sumikin Engineering’s Tokyo International Airport Re-expansion Project Wins 2012 Bentley Be Inspired Award

Project Was Recognized for Innovative Use of Offshore Structural Design and Analysis Software to Complete Complex Fatigue Analyses, Accelerating Construction of First Jacketed Pier Structure for Offshore Airport Runway

EXTON, Pa., U.S.A. – March 12, 2013 – Bentley Systems, Incorporated, the leading company dedicated to providing comprehensive software solutions for sustaining infrastructure, today announced that Nippon Steel & Sumikin Engineering Co., Ltd.’s Tokyo International Airport Re-expansion project has won a 2012 Be Inspired Award. The project won in the “Innovation in Offshore Engineering” category. The recipients of the Be Inspired Awards are selected by independent panels of jurors comprising accomplished Bentley users and distinguished industry experts. The awards honor the extraordinary work of Bentley users improving and sustaining the world’s infrastructure, recognizing outstanding and innovative project achievements in infrastructure design, construction, and operations.

Commenting on the award presented to Nippon Steel & Sumikin Engineering, a leading engineering and construction firm, Anne-Marie Walters, Bentley Global Marketing Director, industrial process and operations, said, “The projects in the ‘Innovation in Offshore Engineering’ award category represent innovation in the use of Bentley software to produce intelligent infrastructure that is measured in terms of operational efficiency, constructability, safety, and use of energy and non-renewable resources in marine environments. This award recognizes projects that have created new and sustainable value in every stage of the facility lifecycle.

“The new JPY 600 billion D-runway at Tokyo International Airport is needed to accommodate growing demand and provide additional arrival and departure slots. With limited space, the only option was to build into the sea on an island 3,120 meters long with a 1,100-meter-long steel jacket-type pier. The jacket structure is 520 meters wide, has an area of 520,000 square meters, and comprises 198 separate units.

“Nippon Steel & Sumikin Engineering performed detailed design and led the five-year construction phase. It used Bentley’s SACS offshore structural analysis and design software to conduct the complex fatigue analyses for the jacket units – totaling nearly 40,000 checkpoints – in just six months. Automatic calculation of stress concentration factors shortened the time required, and material take-offs allowed quantity estimates to be made immediately upon completion.

“The judges determined that this project was an amazing feat of engineering that sustains the environment, the infrastructure professions, and society. They further recognized it for being the first use of a jacketed pier structure for an offshore airport runway – a runway, I might add, designed to withstand an Airbus A380 rolling over its surface 11.5 million times over its projected 100-year lifespan. On behalf of my colleagues at Bentley, I congratulate Nippon Steel & Sumikin Engineering on this extraordinary accomplishment!”

Kenji Horikoshi, Director-General, Nippon Steel & Sumikin Engineering Co., Ltd., Oil & Gas Design & Engineering Department, Marine Engineering & Construction Division, said, “We have been designing, fabricating, and constructing offshore steel structures for over forty years, including oil and gas production platforms and other large infrastructure. Haneda airport is the most complicated and innovative steel structure that we have ever done. One of the reasons why we were able to complete this project on a fast-track schedule of no more than five years is our use of SACS sophisticated structural analysis software, which contributed to the highly efficient design of the project’s large steel structures, such as the airport foundation, whose design had to accommodate various loading conditions and environmental conditions, including airplane loading and earthquakes. We very much appreciate the performance of SACS and for being selected to receive this Be Inspired Award.”

About the Be Inspired Awards Program

Since 2004, the Be Inspired Awards competition has showcased excellence and innovation in the design, construction, and operations of architecture and engineering infrastructure projects around the world. The Be Inspired Awards is unique – the only competition of its kind that is global in scope and comprehensive in categories covered, encompassing all types of infrastructure projects. In the awards program, which is open to all users of Bentley software, independent panels of industry experts select finalists and a winner for each category.

The 2012 Be Inspired Awards ceremony recognized outstanding achievement and innovation in infrastructure design, construction, and operations by winners selected from 58 project finalists by five independent panels of jurors. In total, nominations from more than 250 organizations in 39 countries were submitted in the 2012 awards program. About Nippon Steel & Sumikin Engineering Co., Ltd.

The Engineering Divisions Group of Nippon Steel Corporation was established in 1974 and in July 2006 was spun off from Nippon Steel to become an independent company. Since that time, the company has consistently achieved its business goals.

Steel’s contribution to the prosperity of human civilization dates back to a time well before recorded history. This basic material, which continues to support a wide range of industries as the most user-friendly building and manufacturing material in use today, is mass produced by Nippon Steel & Sumitomo Metal Corporation with high precision, to the nano level.

Nippon Steel & Sumikin Engineering Co., Ltd. has inherited these manufacturing processes, processing technology, and elemental technology used in the heating, anti-corrosion protection, and welding of steel materials. The company applies its technological capabilities to the design, engineering, construction, and operation of a range of facilities, including steel plants, environmental plants, and large steel structures, and has the management capability to execute and oversee these large-scale projects. These key strengths are the foundation for the trust that the company’s customers place in it, which is why Nippon Steel & Sumikin Engineering Co. takes great pride in them.
