Frank Harmon, FAIA, To Present Seminar During The 2013 AIA National Convention

Harmon and AIA NC leaders will discuss “A LEED Platinum Study in Urban Sustainable Design.”

February 7, 2013 (Raleigh, NC) -- Frank Harmon, FAIA, principal of Frank Harmon Architect PA in Raleigh, announces that the American Institute of Architects (AIA) has accepted his proposal for a 90-minute seminar he’ll present during the 2013 AIA National Convention to be held in Denver, Colorado, June 20-22.

Harmon’s presentation, entitled “Connecting Architects, Lawyers and the Public: A LEED Platinum Study in Urban Sustainable Design,” will be a case study of the new AIA North Carolina (AIA NC) Center for Architecture and Design in downtown Raleigh. His presentation is scheduled for Thursday, June 20, from 4-5:30 p.m.

The theme for the 2013 AIA National Convention is “Leadership for Architecture, Leadership Beyond Architecture.” Programs and presentations will “examine architects’ roles as civic leaders and advance awareness of how architecture makes people’s lives better,” according to the AIA website.

The 12,000-square-foot Center for Architecture and Design, completed in March 2012 in the central business district of North Carolina’s Capital City, is the first AIA facility in the nation to be built from the ground up. It is also on schedule to receive LEED Platinum accreditation, the highest certification a building can receive from the U.S. Green Building Council.

“Architects must grasp the opportunity to lead by example, not only on the national level but also within the state chapters,” Harmon said. “The AIA NC building provides an ideal case study to demonstrate how architects across the nation can assume the leadership role in the sustainability revolution by designing high-profile buildings that drastically reduce our buildings’ carbon footprints and, therefore, improve our lives.”

According to Harmon, AIA NC’s headquarters is “a tangible place where the community and government leaders can experience a thoroughly sustainable building and begin to think beyond what they’ve previously thought about office buildings. It also demonstrates a successful application of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act and creative funding of a high profile, high performance project during the country’s worst economic period since the Great Depression.”

David Crawford, Hon. AIA, Executive Vice President AIA NC, and Irvin Pearce, AIA, President of AIA NC and a principal in Pearce Brinkley Cease + Lee, will join Harmon in the presentation, which is sponsored by AIA North Carolina.
