Robin Partington Architects' Park House Project Wins 2012 Bentley Be Inspired Award

Project Was Recognized for Use of Generative Design Software to Solve Extremely Difficult Design Challenges, Including Pushing the Boundaries of Glass Bending

LONDON – 31 January 2013 – Robin Partington Architects, a leading architectural firm, today announced that its Park House project in London, U.K., has won a 2012 Be Inspired Award from Bentley Systems, Incorporated. Bentley is the leading company dedicated to providing comprehensive software solutions for sustaining infrastructure. The project won in the “Innovation in Generative Design” category. The recipients of the Be Inspired Awards are selected by independent panels of jurors comprising accomplished Bentley users and distinguished industry experts. The awards honor the extraordinary work of Bentley users improving and sustaining the world’s infrastructure, recognizing outstanding and innovative project achievements in infrastructure design, construction, and operations.

Commenting on the award presented to Robin Partington Architects, Huw Roberts, Bentley Vice President, core marketing, said, “The projects in the ‘Innovation in Generative Design’ award category used associative parametric modeling to automate design processes and accelerate design iterations. The projects exemplify new ways to efficiently explore alternative building forms and design options without manually building a detailed design model for each scenario. Their use of generative design accelerates design and documentation efficiency and improves design quality.

“The Park House is a 1.04-acre city block redevelopment on the edge of Mayfair in London, United Kingdom, comprising retail space at the basement, ground, and first-floor levels; seven floors of office space on the western end; and 39 private residential flats to the east. The GBP 100 million project posed structural challenges due to its unique façade, mixed use, proximity to a London Underground tunnel, and retail requirements of a world-renowned location.

“As the judges noted upon reaching their decision, with the help of Bentley’s generative design software, GenerativeComponents, Robin Partington Architects solved extremely difficult design challenges, including pushing the boundaries of glass bending. They were able to explore various iterations of glass technology and its abilities, which allowed the team to use cold-bending on over 85 percent of the glass panels to minimize the need for curved panels. On behalf of my colleagues at Bentley, I congratulate Robin Partington Architects on this extraordinary accomplishment!”

Paul Rogers, Project Director, Robin Partington Architects, said, “It is truly an honor to receive the prestigious Be Inspired Award and gratifying given our team’s hard work and dedication in bringing this world-class project to successful completion. We pride ourselves in producing great buildings that are comfortable within their own skin and at ease in their context, and Bentley’s GenerativeComponents generative design software helped us fulfill this commitment on the Park House project.”

About the Be Inspired Awards Program

Since 2004, the Be Inspired Awards competition has showcased excellence and innovation in the design, construction, and operations of architecture and engineering infrastructure projects around the world. The Be Inspired Awards is unique – the only competition of its kind that is global in scope and comprehensive in categories covered, encompassing all types of infrastructure projects. In the awards program, which is open to all users of Bentley software, independent panels of industry experts select finalists and a winner for each category.

The awards are presented during a ceremony at Be Inspired: Innovations in Infrastructure, an invitation-only conference that provides a unique forum for senior-level executives to learn about the innovations driving the development and operations of the world’s top infrastructure projects. The 2012 Be Inspired Awards ceremony recognized outstanding achievement and innovation in infrastructure design, construction, and operations by winners selected from 58 project finalists by five independent panels of jurors. In total, nominations from more than 250 organizations in 39 countries were submitted in the 2012 awards program.
