Concern for ethical manufacturing in IT is growing. Considering the recent Apple / Foxxconn revelations of inadequate working conditions and subsequent social audit, TCO Development believes the problem is industry-wide.

Stephen Fuller, responsible for the CSR-criteria in TCO Certified, comments: "The IT-industry needs to improve its social commitment in manufacturing. However, since introducing our CSR requirements we see a clear increase in brands engaging in CSR practices at their facilities."

Sören Enholm, CEO at TCO Development, adds: "Private and public sector organizations want sustainable IT solutions. They need to know that IT products they buy with environmental features don't present a trade-off in the working conditions where they are manufactured. We encourage all IT purchasers to make sure they request TCO Certified products from their vendors."

For purchasers wanting to make sustainable IT choices, TCO Certified provides the confidence that all product models are third-party verified. Manufacturer CSR actions, including progress toward meeting ILO and UN conventions, are verified by social audits and engagement in programs such as SA8000 and EICC. The TCO Development database offers a complete listing of all certified products.

The criteria of TCO Certified ensure that the manufacture, use and recycling of IT products is carried out with regard to environmental, social and economic considerations. The program is a useful tool for professional buyers, making sustainable IT purchasing easier.
