IMTS 2012 Announces Alliance with the Chicago Alternative Policing Strategy (CAPS)

IMTS 2012 Show Management and Exhibitors to Participate by Donating Usable Items

August 30, 2012 - McLean, Va. . . . IMTS – The International Manufacturing Technology Show 2012 will once again join forces with the City of Chicago and its Chicago Alternative Policing Strategy (CAPS) IMTS 2012 by donating, and offering IMTS exhibitors the opportunity to donate usable items, to the program for use by volunteers, following IMTS, which is being held at Chicago’s McCormick Place, Sept. 10-15, 2012.

CAPS is a partnership between police and the community that fosters the philosophy of community policing to help fight crime.  What makes CAPS innovative is that it brings the police, the community, and other city agencies together to identify and solve neighborhood crime problems, rather than simply react to their symptoms after the fact.

Problem-solving at the neighborhood level is supported by strategies including neighborhood-based beat officers, regular Beat Community Meetings involving police and residents, extensive training for both police and community, more efficient use of City service that impact crime, and new technology to help police and residents target crime hotspots.  CAPS implementation began in 1993 and is operational in all of Chicago’s neighborhoods.

“CAPS has been recognized as one of the most ambitious community policing initiatives in the United States and has been cited as a model by numerous national experts,” says Peter Eelman, IMTS Vice President - Exhibitions and Communications.  “We fully support the CAPS effort and plan to support the program, along with our exhibitors.”

Among the items that have potential for donation are tote/laptop/messenger bags, pens, badge holders, lanyards, poster board, office supplies, drink bottles/mugs, hand sanitizers and candy, to name a few.  The donations are transported and distributed by the Chicago Police Department to CAPS volunteers, Chicago’s Senior Fest, the Chicago Public Schools and faith-based organizations.

Complete information will be available prior to IMTS for coordinating exhibitor donations.
