New England’s Largest Robotics Competition Returns to Hartford

(BUSINESS WIRE) — March 29, 2012

WHAT: The Northeast Utilities FIRST Connecticut Regional robotics competition

WHEN: Friday-Saturday, March 30-31, 9 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.; opening ceremonies Friday, 8:30 a.m.

WHERE: Connecticut Convention Center, 100 Columbus Blvd., Hartford, Conn.

The Connecticut Convention Center will be rocking with more than 2,400 students on 64 robot teams participating in the Northeast Utilities FIRST Connecticut Regional robotics competition for the chance to advance to the FIRST international championship in St. Louis, Missouri. This event is free and open to the public.

The basketball-themed event will feature high school teams from Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York, New Jersey and Texas operating remote controlled robots in an arena competition that will also recognize design excellence, safety, creativity and sportsmanship.

The teams were given just six weeks to design and build a robot for this year’s challenge: shooting as many balls into hoops as possible during two-minute, 15-second matches. Four hoops are located at each end of the arena at different heights, with more points awarded to shots made into the higher hoops. Team can earn bonus points if they can balance their robots on bridges at the end of each match.

This is the 18th year that the competition has been held in Hartford. For additional information, please visit http://www.ctfirst.org/frc/. Additional information about FIRST can be found by visiting www.usfirst.org.
