NORCROSS, Georgia, USA, 14 March 2012 – Leica Geosystems Inc. today announced that AeroMetric of Sheboygan, Wisconsin has purchased a Leica
ALS70-HP LiDAR scanner and upgraded two of its Z/I DMC digital mapping cameras. AeroMetric made the investment in new and upgraded Leica and Z/I technology to better serve its customers across a wide range of vertical markets.
“We are constantly looking to bring additional value to our clients,” said Antonio Montoya, AeroMetric Vice President of Marketing. “This technology will allow us to go deeper into the markets we serve to meet the growing mapping needs of our clientele.”
AeroMetric is a full-service geospatial solutions company that provides services to federal, state and local government agencies as well as private sector companies. The firm works in markets as diverse as transportation, energy, utilities, environment and emergency management – which played a key role in its selection of the Leica ALS70-HP LiDAR scanner.
The Leica ALS70 is an affordable airborne laser scanner with a 500 kHz pulse rate capability designed specifically for high-density point collection in diverse environments to serve many type of elevation mapping projects. The Leica ALS70-HP version was developed for general purpose mapping over a wide variety of terrain conditions at different flying altitudes. The ALS70 utilizes full waveform pulses, which allow for better analysis of ground cover and extraction of more meaningful information.
“The ALS70 will allow us to fly higher and faster without sacrificing point density,” said Montoya. “In addition, this LiDAR sensor offers three user-selected scan patterns that provide us the flexibility to meet the specific mapping requirements of different projects.”
Over more than 80 years of service, AeroMetric has been a pioneer in the commercial implementation of new mapping and photogrammetric technologies. The firm was among the first to make the jump to airborne digital imaging when Z/I Imaging introduced the DMC large-format frame mapping camera in 2000. AeroMetric purchased three DMCs and has upgraded two of these original systems to the same current technology level as the third one.
“The DMC line of digital frame cameras have become best known for their superior image clarity, spatial resolution and accuracy,” said Jean Gardiner, General Manager of the Leica Geospatial Solutions.
The DMC upgrades contracted by AeroMetric include replacing the original data storage with a state-of-the-art Solid State Disk system, which makes the sensor much lighter and more portable. Enhanced flight management hardware and software have also been installed.
Designed specifically as a photogrammetric mapping camera, the DMC offers a frame-based image geometry and a custom lens design that result in very high-quality geometric resolution and minimal distortion. All DMC systems collect four-band multispectral (Red, Green, Blue, Near IR) and black-and-white panchromatic imagery. Automated forward motion compensation and rapid refresh rate enable operators to fly the DMC at low altitudes for large-scale survey applications and at higher altitudes for small-scale regional projects.
