September 9, 2011 – The AECCafe/ShareCG Sustainable Architecture Challenge is closed and the results are in.   It was a very tough completion to judge.  All the entries were extremely innovative while at the same time being practical. While there were a couple of exceptions ( O’ Mighty Green and Bike Sauna) these entries also demonstrated a flare for being creatively original.

Contestants were asked to submit their energy efficient sustainable residential or commercial architectural projects and three top entrants did just that.

1st prize ( HP EliteBook 8760w Mobile Workstation) goes to Oppenheim Architecture + Design for their COR Mixed Use Condominium Complex.

This dramatic architectural structure 400’ above the Design District and extracts power from its environment using the latest advancements in wind turbines, photovoltaic’s, and solar hot water generation— while integrating them into its architectural identity. A hyper-efficient exoskeleton shell simultaneously provides building structure, thermal mass for insulation, shading for natural cooling, enclosure for terraces, armatures for turbines, and loggias for congregating on the ground. Comprising commercial, office, fitness, live/work, and pure residential spaces—COR provides a uniquely flexible platform for lifestyle enhancement.  The complex takes advantage of wind energy, green insulating roofs, solar hot water, integrated photovoltaics, planned solar shading, and grey water recycling among other innovations.

2nd prize ( ArchiCAD 15 from GRAPHISOFT) is awarded to Kjellgren Kaminsky Architecture for Solongen, a multi residential complex.

Karim has designed his vision, the World Sustainability Center, to advance the cause of Green design.  The proposed center will be part of eco-tourism in Alexandria,Egypt focusing on an inspirational view of nature and its power elements. The aim is to provide an engaging, interactive, immersive, and ever-changing experience that instills the fascinating potential of nature to address human problems, with the ultimate goal of moving people from inspiration to action by showing architecturally, in its 5 pavilions, how sun, wind, water and earth can provide sustainable living.

Every entry is unique and well thought out and run the gamut from minimalist vacation structures to floating stadiums and hotels.  All are inspirational, well worth viewing and all came within a hair’s breadth of winning.  Take a minute to see these exceptional and in many cases futuristic architectural wonders.

A big thank you to all the architects who submitted entries, and enjoy their inspiring work!
