Digital Data Services, Inc. Awarded Contract with the State of Colorado

September 8th, 2011 -- Lakewood, CO- Digital Data Services, Inc. (DDS) announced that it has been awarded a contract with the State of Colorado Department of Natural Resources-Colorado Geological Survey (CGS) for data conversion and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) data delivery. Under the agreement, DDS will convert historic drawings of 376 abandoned coal mines (649 maps), into an intelligent computerized map format. These historic documents show coal mine boundaries, outcrops, shafts, adits, and underground workings for eight (8) coal fields in Colorado.

"Because of our experience working with the Colorado Geological Survey over the past 10 years, DDS, Inc. is has become an industry leader in geospatial information solutions as it relates to underground mining and subsidence"- says Scott C. Carter President of DDS, Inc.

Across the State of Colorado, there are an estimated 23,000 abandoned mine sites.  These mines have various hazard issues ranging from environmental to physical dangers.  The Colorado Geological Survey needs to characterize and understand these issues for safety and development purposes.  Prior to this project, the locations of these mine sites only existed in a paper map format, filed away in a store room.

With the data converted into a GIS format, miners, geologist, contractors, and other individuals can access the location of the mines on a computerized map to safely plan development and quickly respond to disaster situations in the case of a collapse.  What once would have taken days or weeks to analyze can now be accomplished in a matter of minutes.
