European dental seminars showcase WorkNC Dental CADCAM

July 26, 2010 - Sescoi welcomed 50 dental professionals to two seminars held simultaneously in Barcelona and at its dental machining showroom in Macon, France, to demonstrate the benefits of using WorkNC Dental CADCAM software, its automated ‘One Button’ CAM software to produce dental prostheses.

The dental machining seminar participants in Macon were able to see the full sequence of the process. Impressions are taken with partner Dental Wings’ scanner to determine the stump or implant geometry before building up the tooth anatomy for new crowns or bridges. The WorkNC Dental CADCAM software takes the manipulated CAD data and nests it in the blank, ready for machining, automatically detecting margin lines and adding the pins necessary for support during cutting. Automatic machining wizards then apply the toolpath with one mouse click and are dedicated to the different types of material used in prostheses. These include zirconia, titanium, chrome cobalt, wax, PMMA and lithium disilicate. Machining techniques vary considerably between these materials, so the intelligence built into WorkNC Dental automates the selection of tools and cutting strategies, making it ideal for technicians unfamiliar with CNC programming.

At the Macon seminar, visitors heard from Sébastien Renois who described how the CADCAM system fits in with the day to day running of a dental laboratory. This was followed by the live 5-axis CNC machining, in Sescoi’s toolroom, of prostheses designed during the day. Participants could see that ease of use is a key element of the system, allowing them to concentrate on their skills in dental reconstruction. Not having to concern themselves with the technologies of CADCAM and CNC machining, will enable them to be considerably more productive.

As well as participating in the European Prodentic project, which aims to promote technologically advanced manufacturing methods and make them accessible to the majority of dental professionals, the development of WorkNC Dental has led the French government organisation, OSEO, to classify Sescoi an ‘ Innovative Company’. Sescoi already has considerable experience in automated 3+2 and 5-axis toolpaths, and these techniques are directly applicable to the machining of bridges, crowns and implants.

By collaborating with numerous partners to provide an open dental CADCAM solution for dental professionals, Sescoi is enabling more laboratories to invest in the technology. Managers can choose the mix of products most suited to their needs and budget, while keeping skill requirements to a minimum.
