Monolith Semiconductor to Demonstrate Fast-Switching SiC MOSFETs at APEC 2016

LONG BEACH, Calif. — (BUSINESS WIRE) — March 14, 2016Monolith Semiconductor, Inc., a Round Rock, Texas-based start-up company developing Silicon Carbide technology, will be demonstrating its fast-switching SiC MOSFETs in its booth (#1655) at this year’s Applied Power Electronics Conference (APEC). The conference will run March 20–24, 2016 at the Long Beach Convention & Entertainment Center, Long Beach, California. Demonstrations will be offered to booth visitors on a continuous basis.

The in-booth demonstration will illustrate the capabilities of Monolith’s SiC technology by operating a 5 kW buck converter (as illustrated in the schematic) with 675 V nominal input and 350 V nominal output at high frequencies (~200 kHz) and high efficiency (>98%) converter performance that can’t be achieved with Silicon IGBTs.

Monolith’s cutting-edge SiC technology also allows for drastic reductions in device size and weight (as a result of the higher frequency capabilities) and power consumption (due to reduced power losses) in applications like data center Uninterruptible Power Systems (UPS).

Representatives from Monolith Semiconductor and the designer of the power converter will be on hand to share additional information on the advantages of Monolith’s SiC technology and how it can enable higher frequency and higher efficiency power converter applications.

In 2015, Monolith formed a strategic partnership with Littelfuse, Inc. to develop power semiconductors for industrial and automotive markets. “Littelfuse is an ideal partner for us,” said Sujit Banerjee, PhD, CEO of Monolith Semiconductor. “We are excited for the opportunity this offers to increase our customer reach dramatically, gain access to global channels, and benefit from their sales and marketing depth and expertise.” Littelfuse has committed to add to its investment as Monolith achieves specific technological milestones.

Monolith Semiconductor also has a strategic manufacturing partnership with a major CMOS fabrication facility in Texas to produce Monolith’s 150mm SiC wafers in high volumes. By producing SiC power diodes and MOSFETs in a facility typically used for silicon, Monolith Semiconductor will lower the cost, improve the reliability, and expand the availability of SiC devices. The objective is to make their adoption economically feasible for a wider range of high-performance, high-efficiency power electronics systems.

About Monolith Semiconductor

Monolith Semiconductor Inc., a Round Rock, Texas-based start-up company, is focused on improving the affordability and reliability of SiC power devices by using advanced manufacturing techniques and high-performance processes and designs. The company is currently focusing on the development of silicon carbide power diodes and MOSFETs (metal-oxide semiconductor field-effect transistors). Monolith is the first vendor to offer SiC MOSFETs manufactured on 150mm SiC wafers on an automotive-qualified silicon CMOS line.
