Spatial Data Integrations, Inc. (SDI) To Develop IENC Database for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

LOUISVILLE, Ky., September 21, 2010 –The United States Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) – Louisville District contracted Spatial Data Integrations, Inc. (SDI) to establish and populate an Inland Electronic Navigation Chart (IENC) database for streamlining data entry.

The United States inland navigation system consists of 8,200 miles of rivers that reside within 22 states and are maintained by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. The effective system of barge navigation, throughout these rivers, move over 625 million tons of commodities annually. Some commodities include coal, petroleum products, various other raw materials, food and farm products, chemicals, and manufactured goods. The IENC database establishes the charting standards required for inland navigation and is the basis for producing Inland Electronic Navigation Charts, which allow for safe and efficient navigation of our North American inland waterways. In addition to North America, the IENC standard is flexible enough to accommodate additional inland waterway requirements in other regions of the world.

SDI will establish and populate an IENC database that will be used to successfully create the IENC Encoding Guide required for inland navigation. Custom code and logic for streamlining the data entry capabilities of the database will be implemented. The IENC database will also provide a user-friendly schema that will allow the USACE to successfully modify all database contents and satisfy the necessary demand to update the IENC Encoding Guide.
